I have had this 1466 for two years now and can not get it to run cool. The biggest load I pull with it it is a round hay baler and 20 ft bushhog. As soon as it get under a strain up comes the tempeture. It usually runs around 230-235 all day, i put a gauage with numbers on it. Cleaned the radiator, tried different theromastates, put a eight blade fan on . No compression in the radiator. Can take off the cap at 230 degrees and no presure at all in the radiator. antifreeze looks to be flowing good in the radiator looking down in it. Any ideals????? ?

FWIW I have heard and believe true that running without a thermostat allows the coolant to flow too fast for the radiator to remove heat from it. Any thoughts?

If all the ideas from below does not work then i would be checking timming and just how much Hp. she is putting out . If you say you are not getting any comp. in the rad. that would leave out a seeping head gskt. or and injector cup or pin holes in the sleeves . But 235 is way to hot and is not helping the life of the engine .

JJK's right on about the cap; that should be a pressure system, and if it isn't building and keeping pressure it'll run hot. Try Allen's temp check first; if guage reading right examine cap carefully, 'cuz they can rust out enough to let pressure out and look perfect. Drop it a foot or so on concrete, upside down (the cap, not the concrete) to see if any rust flakes fall out. Also, look inside radiator when not running with strong light to see if tubes have coating of scale (excellent heat keeper) AND at night shine light thru fins to make sure not dirty/clogged enough to keep much air from being pulled thru by fan (you can suck in a lot of wasps and grasshoppers). Good luck.

If there's no pressure in the radiator then the radiator cap must be shot because there should be about 10 psi built up to help circulate the water properly. If the guage isn't wrong and it is actually that hot then the radiator could even be plugged up on the inside from scale and corrosion from lack of DCA. Bring it in to the radiator shop to have it cleaned out or if that bad replace the core.

Larry,

I've had four IH tractors do the same exact thing in my day.

In every case, it was a bad gauge. Next time it says "hot", stick a cooking thermometer down in the radiator. Betcha it shows normal.
