I have a 1953 Super M with a 12 v generator. I don't know if is original equipment or not. When I bought it, it had a ballast resistor installed. I am currently running without, seems OK. Is it necessary? Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply. The post just showed up on my computer. Thanks for the help-the coil is 12 v and says no external resister required.

On a 12 volt tractor the external Ballast Resistor is indeed required IFFFFF FFFFF:

A) Its a 6 volt coil

B) If the coil is labeled "12 Volts for use with an external Ballast Resistor"

NO EXTERNAL BALLAST IS REQUIRED IFFFFF FFFFF F

A) Its a true full 12 volt rated coil what some call an Internally Ballasted Coil (such are often labeled "12 Volts"

B) If the coil is labeled "12 Volts NO external Ballast required"

If the colil gets so hot you can barely lay you hand on it,,,,,its probably a 6 volt coil and needs a ballast PLUS the points burn up quickly.

If you measure the coils primary resistance between its lil + and - terminals, a 6 volt will be around 1.25 to 1.75 ohms while a 12 volt will be more like 2.5 to 3.5 ohms.

I would check that coil to see if has 12 volt on it. If it's a 6 volt you can burn up the coil and points. Here's NAPA's P/N for the ballast resistor. ECHICR13 Hal

It maybe just find or it may not be, it all depends on it the coil is a 12 volt coil that doesn't need the resistor of if its the 6 volt coil and then you need the resistor or you will burn up the coil faster. Shoot I have even seen a coil explode because it was a 6 volt coil being run with out a resistor on 12 volts. And when they explode they sound like a shotgun going off under the hood and they also make one heck of a mess of oil and crud all over that side of the engine. BTDT and it will scare the_____ out of you if it happens

If you have a 12V coil it must say no external resistor required on the coil or you must use the resistor or change the coil $15.00 at NAPA
