Gas Tank Baffle

Hi - Looking inside a 1940 Farmall H gas tank, there is a vertical baffle halfway between the front and the back that seems to divide the tank into two different compartments. This is an X1, and only has one fuel cap on the fore section, as it should. The aft section of the tank appears to not be accessible. Does anybody know what this baffle is for? Thank you.

There is a small amount of clearance at the bottom, and an even greater amount at the top. This baffle is what makes the rocks and hardware method of cleaning the tank a bad idea. Contrary to what some folks think, it is next to impossible to remove all of the rocks and other assorted junk, and the clearance at the bottom is so small that some of this stuff will get lodged in that gap, and you will never get it out.

It's just that a baffle gas can go around and under it if you ever use bolts etc to clean one out you will find that they will go around the baffel also and can take a lot of shaking to get out but they will come out.

Most tractor gas tanks have one or more baffles to keep the gas from sloshing around as much. Likely, the corners are clipped, or there is other clearance around the baffle for the gas to get between the sections in a controlled manner.
