After closer inspection I found that the grinding noise I was hearing wasn't coming from the axle after all. The nuts on the rim clamps had worked loose and it was actually movement between the wheel and the rim that was making the noise. Tightened them up and no more noise. Thaks to everyone who answered my previous post.

A Super M I was looking at before I bough my H, all the rim clamps were loose on one wheel. The owner told me about it before I drove it around. Hadn't gotten around to it. He was using the tractor to pull a mower.
I tightened them for him while I was there. Wish I could have bought that one, too.

An old neighbor of ours got buried in two pieces because of that.

Tractor threw him along with the rim and then proceded to walk right up his middle with that naked wheel. Sliced him right in two.

I had the same problem only with the front wheel rim. It happened right after we painted the rims, insert and had replaced with new rubber. It felt like the rear end was hitting on the teeth in the gears. But after riding and watching the rotation of the tire the same noise was in the same place on the tire when it was down on the road surface. Found bolts had worked its self loose. Boy was I happy it was not the rear end. Then it worked its way loose again this week. They do not seem to stay tight.
