I have a restoreed 51 M that started to clunk in all gears after I changed hypoid oil. what I took out was so thick it wasworse than honey or sorgum. 15 gals. replaced with 90 weight and now it clunks evenly as if a tooth is missing on a gear. any ideas before I split the tractor?

Thanks for the help. Serial # FBK245616. The clunk is mor pronounced when going downhill, not as bad under load.

As Gordo said, you can likely find out what's wrong by looking in through the pto hole. If not, you can take the cover off the transmission and rear end to look inside. An IH or I&T manual will explain how. You can do any needed repairs to the transmission and rear end without splitting the M.
Good luck, Wm

Put 4 different marks on one of your tires that you can see when driving. Then go out and drive in 1st gear, then 4th gear. If you get the clunk at the same 'place' when the wheel rotates then you could have a bull gear problem.Or Axle. Possibly axle movement due to broken inner bearing. Can you feel the clunk as a lateral movement in the tractor? Drain the fluid again, save it of course, and then remove PTO. See whats in the bottom of that tranny. If you find large ball, or bearing retainer pieces it's an axle problem.

One other thing Henry in reply to Henry E, 06-29-2006 10:18:11
The tranny main shaft has a gear right in the front that turns the counter shaft constantly as long as the clutch is engaged. When you shift into a gear the counter shaft turns the main shaft. So it is quite possible that that gear is bad and it will grind no matter which gear you shifted into. The only thing is that it probably would do that in nuetral, unless it only does it under load.

You Do not have to split the tractor unless you have the 12" clutch. If you have s/n FBK294707 or earlier, you don't have to split the tractor. Take off your gas tank, rear gas tank mount, the rear section of the steering rod and the support for the steering wheel. Then take the top plate off of the tranny. You can inspect the entire tranny and differential by jacking both tires off of the ground and rotating them in nuetral. If you disconnect the clutch shaft you can even inspect the counter shaft. This will tell you all you need to know about what is wrong with the tranny. Like I said if you have s/n FBK294707 you can take the clutch out from under the housing where the belly pump goes if you have to change any gears. One thing about the clutch removal, you have to take the entire clutch out, shaft, friction plate, pressure plate, the works. Even if you have a s/n higher than the one above, which more than likely you do, I would still take the top plate off first so you can split the tractor after your parts are on order.
