Hey guys, I'm at a loss as to what's going on and sure would appreciate some help... hay down and rain maybe on the way. All of a sudden tonight the tractor killed and now will only keep running if the starter button is kept depressed... but naturally I can't do this since the starter is engaged also. Weird I say. I've never had anything like this happen before and as I said before I'm definitely at a loss as to what is going on here.

Definetly got a bad ballast resistor. Little white thing up by the coil. It's about a 15 dollar item at your local Case-IH dealer.

It's about a 7 dollar item at autozone for an 85 dodge pickup with a v8 at least a couple years ago it was.

We try to help as much as we can.. The resistor is usually a white piece about 3/4" wide and about 3" long with two leads attached? Should be by coil? resistance is usually 1/2 to 1 ohm..... ..

Gosh guys I wasn't expecting an answer so soon. Thanks a lot. Just to make sure, the ballast resistor is the resistor up by the coil? Right?

Could be by the coil or under the dash. I haven't been on one of those tractors since I was a kid so I'm not sure where it would be.

Ignition switch defective or open ballast resistor?

On this one I can only give an educted guess but I'll almost bet its your problem. Some tractors and cars have a ballast resister that when in the start mood is out of the circuit and if it goes bad it will start and run when the starter is engaged but not when you let off. So My guess is the ballast resistor has gone bad and need to be replaced.
