I just bought a front axle u-bolt from a Case IH Dealer and it was $37.00. I know this has to be hardened steel so I didn"t say anything (yet). I wanted to check it out with you guys first. Has anyone bought one of these and does the price sound right? Thanks, everyone. Larry

Larry: The price doesn't surprise me, and I'm confident you made the right choice. Mild steel just wouldn't cut it. I had some U bolts made up at a truck spring shop just last month, and judging by your price at CaseIH, I doubt if your saving at a spring shop would be great. I wouldn't take the advice of not having the U bolt on there, that guy is in for a rude awakening one of these days.

Running tractors these days is an expensive business. I've watched guys buy an older tractors, and everytime something breaks it's cobbleup, then it's one cobbleup after another, finally after about 10 years of cobbleup, they give up and have nothing but a pile of scrap metal. Then they go out and buy another tractor, costing them twice as much as if they had kept the first one in good shape. Keep your Super A in good shape, it will out last you, even if your only 20.

I have 3 of these little tractors, none of them show tractors, but they are in excellent mechanical condition. None of the 3 men who bought them new are alive today. I expect my grandson will use them and he's only 7 weeks old.

I'm am confident enough next week I'm going out for hire doing some custom work, edged out a guy with a relatively new 25 hp Deere, not because I'm doing it for less money, the customer is confident I have the ability and equipment to do the best job.

Thanks everyone, and Hugh I guess you are right. Even though it's expensive, it will last for ever and I won't be worrying about it. Gene, making one is a good idea too, but I don't have an acetylene torch to bend the rod or the tap and die set large enough to thread. Those things are on my wish list and hope to have them some day. Thanks again guys. Larry

Larry: I remember one that jolted me about 10 years ago, that being the spring on the brake pedal under the platform of my Super A. CaseIH partsman that I had dealt with for 30 odd years wanted $28. CAD for one of those. I said, " Your touched in the head man, I can buy a spring that will do that for a whole lot less money." He laughed and said, "You'll be back."

Well I tried a half dozen other springs that cost $30., none of them worked. So, I had to eat crow and go back and buy the $28. spring from my good CaseIH friend. He said, " That original spring on your Super A lasted 40 years, perhaps this one will as well." Think about this one, my 3 tractors have 6 of those springs One is 10 years old, one is 53 years old, two are 48 years old and two are 43 years old, quite good service when you think about it.

You may want to consider getting a quote from an automotive spring shop. They've made U bolts for me in the past, typically for less than $10 if I remember right.

It's interesting that the U bolt has to be hardened -- it must be some sort of a wear issue. I would have thought that the increased brittleness of a hardened bolt would be a negative in an axle application.

Very interesting question. I"m not sure what the U bolt is even for. I had problems with my front axel about 30 years ago and couldn"t get it off so I cut it off with a torch. Never did replace it and don"t miss it. I do use it on level ground though, although I"ve used it to help clear a few acres of new ground by pulling trees and such in piles to burn. But it is mostly a small garden tractor. If I needed one, I would also build it rather than buy it.

Why didnt you make one? Buy the materials, cut the threads then bend to fit it all takes money.

Sounds average for CIH to me. On some of the older parts I order, I never know if I am going to pay $20 or $200, usually closer to $200, but at least I can still get parts. The quality of those older parts is generally unrelated to price.
