Why does my 330u use a lot of gas?

I put about 2 gallons of gas in my 330u the other day and it seems to be empty already in about one hour. I did check the glass bowl for leaks and found none. Any ideas?

Here is another way to look at it. Take any new small car with a 4 cylinder engine and drive it for an hour on the highway. If you are getting 30 to 35 miles to the gallon it will use about 2 gallons a fuel per hour. I would guess the engine in the car at highway speed is putting out 30 to 40 horsepower at 2,500 RPM which is very close to what a 330 tractor engine is doing when loaded.

Properly working gas tractor = approx 9 horsepower hours / gallon.

Properly working naturally aspirated diesel tractor = approx 12 hp-hrs/gal.

Properly working turbo diesel tractor = approx 15 hp-hrs/gal. These numbers are averaged from Nebraska Tests.

An allowance must be made for idling. Assumming no idling time, you must have produced about an average 18 hp during that hour.

656 diesel pulling 12 foot disk = 48 hp = 4 U.S. gallons / hour.

Superman: I farmed for a whole lot of years, probably saw 100,000 hours go on tractors. There are only 3 items to look for in a Nebraska test. flywheel hp, pto or belt hp and drawbar hp. What they give you for fuel comsumption will never come to reality in field conditions.

The 560 and 656 diesels are a 282 engine and I had both of those tractors. I've seen my 656 plow all day on a 5x16 bottoms, plowing 8" deep and never burnt more than 2 gph of fuel. Even my 560 which was cranked up to 90 hp, working to it's limit would only burn 3 gph. I'm also talking hour meter hours, so on both those tractors, thus it was hours at 1800 rpm.

I accquired a mid 40"s A and used it as was for 4 yrs, decided this yr to pull the plugs and clean and reset them! Thanks to the guys on this forum! I reset them properly, I only mow a 2 acre field 3 times a yr, the fuel usage has been cut in half!!!!! !!

Important things to remember: Gas usage depends on throttle position, load and maintenance factors such as clean air filter, recent tune-up,clean oil= less friction, etc

I do not doubt anyones gas useage but like gas mileage on my trucks some people get double what I can get. We used to burn 2 full tanks a 12 hour day when doing tillage work with H or M and with G John Deere we carried 5 gallons to field with us so we could run full half day without going in for fuel. We went to Massey Fergusions in sixtys and have burned 80 gallons of diesel a day with 1100 (little less than 100 HP) it was loaded up and smoking all day though.

I'm with you, Tweeter. Just because the others use that much fuel doesn't mean its economical. These days that makes it cost $5-$8 hr just for fuel. I had a 354 (144 ci engine) and it used about 2 gal/hr. I bought a heavier (5000 #) 35 PTO hp diesel tractor and it uses about a gallon/hr. You will have to decide if a more expensive diesel tractor is worth the fuel savings. If you run it about 100 hrs/yr, thats about 250-300 $ less in fuel. There are other advantages to the diesel in a farm tractor, though.

gene: Your right, it damn well wasn't economical, in the early 1960s my dad and I were cropping 225 acres with a 300 as the main power source. I can name you numerous farm jobs where that old 300 was sucking back 3 Imperial gallons per hour. 8' disk was one, 9' haybine was another, baler with thrower pulling wagons was another, I could go on and on.

Why do you suppose there are so many H, M, 300, 400, 350 and 450 around today with few hours on them The diesels put them right out of the fields when came to economy.

We bought one of the last 560 diesels built and later a 656 diesel. Those tractors were doing a lot of the same work the 300 did and were doing it on 1 Imperial gallon per hour. The baler and haybine were two prime examples. The diesels ran them better and fuel consumption dropped from 3 gph to 1 gph. Our haybine was a NH 460 and the 300 regularly broke 3 to 5 shear bolts per day. I can't ever remember breaking a shear bolt running that same haybine with 560 or 656. Why, the 300 would labour a bit then the governors would hit it an away goes a shear bolt. Those two diesels were steady, never wavered from their pto speed.

The 300 pulled and 28 blade 16" blade size disk, while the 560 and 656 pulled a 44 blade 20" blade size disk on roughly half the fuel. Those old gassers were parked many years ago, and the 6 cylinder gassers were even worse. No one that was serious about making money farming could afford to keep those gassers around as a main power source. You take the guy down the page doing a 100 bales in three hours with a Farmall 400, that wouldn't burn much gas, crank that old 400 up to 350 to 400 bales an hour and I guarentee she'll suck back 3 GPH.

Those 4 cylinder IH tractors are pretty much gas hogs.....and the 330,having the smallest of the 300/330/350 series tractor engines should get the best "mileage".Remember though that a 300/350 puts out 40-42 hp,and a 40-42hp Kohler or Wisconsin gas engine would probably consume pretty close to the same amounts.Compare it against a 12 hp MTD lawn tractor and there is no comparison.....

I think someone needs to come up with an electronic fuel injection system for these tractors...it would be costly, but would bring them fully up to modern day technology. (Pertronix electronic ignition,Delco 10SI internal regulated 12V alternator, and EFI)
The anti lock brakes and air bags can be left off though.....lol

Actually, that sounds like an interesting project :-)

Wonder what size injectors would be needed? it might be possible to find a small throttle body that would fit where the carb is; would save the need to drill injector ports into the intake ports.

Would need a small fuel pump too, and a pressure regulator too.

think i've got something to do over the winter now!

Tweeter, That don't sound to bad to me either.

Heck I got a 17 horse Kawasaki on my lawn mower and you can burn 4to5 gallon a hour in it.

My 300 Farmall will burn 3 gallon a hour raking hay.

Shoot, I raked and baled for 3 hours straight on the 400. I got a 100 little squares( by myself) and only used 5 gallons. Just have to play with it and rub its belly.

Tweeter: My guess is, that's about normal. That tractor has a C-135 engine and slightly less hp than a 300 with C-169 engine. My old 300 could gobble up 3 gallons per hour very easily. I'm talking Imperial gallons, about 20% larger than a US gallon.

Seems to me that is excessive usage. I would think not much over 2 gal./hr and that would be on a good pull.
