Part Numbers for Farmall H

Hello,

I have been at the JD site for many years now, and this is my first visit to the Farmall forum. A few days ago, someone gave to me a Farmall H. A quick S/N search indicates that it is a mid 1940 model. The X1 on the tag seems to mean that it was intended to only be used with gasoline as a fuel. The sheet metal is in great shape and so are the cast wheels. The rear rims are corroded somewhat, but don't appear to be too far gone. Tires are fair. The engine doesn't turn freely by hand when grabbing the front pulley, so it may be stuck. The only very obvious missing pieces are the tube from the air cleaner to the carb, and the carb itself. The only obvious defective part is the combination intake and exhaust manifold. Toward the bottom of the exhaust portion of the manifold, there is a hole the size of a pencil eraser facing the outside of the tractor. Since I am still learning about Farmalls, and undecided as to whether to keep and restore this tractor, I have not purchased a shop manual and parts manual. In the meantime, would anybody know what the part numbers are for the carb, air tube, and manifold? I would like to price them out, and I'd like to be able to reference the correct part numbers.

One last item. It appears that there were 391,000 H's made, and that there were more 1940 H's made than pretty much any other year. Is there anything else good or bad about this year?

Thank you,
Greg

Thank you all for your help. Looks like several of you have extras of the parts that I need. If you are interested in selling them, you can e-mail me directly at home using skyparkohio@sbcglobal.net. Tonight I am going to remove the spark plugs and see if the engine will turn over.

Thanks again! Greg

The pencil size hole in the manifold should have a 1/4 inch pipe plug in it. What it's for is anybodys guess. If the hole is open into the manifold, it will need to be plugged. ken

I also have the carb, manifold and pipe. P/N's won't do you any good because none of these are available from IH. Fair market on the items is about 80 for the manifold, 5 for the pipe, and about 200 for a pro rebuilt carb.

My advice is to sell it now, before you get the fever.

You know why there are more JD's in collections than Farmalls? The Farmalls are still working.

Welcome to the wondeful world of red.
My H catalogue says that the gasoline model manifold for S#501 to 106907 is 8033 DCX. The kit, includes gasket, manifold, 6 nuts, 6 studs, and 4 washers is 8033 DCY.
S# 106908 and up takes the same manifold, but also requires a 1/8" square head pipe plug, 103877, or optionally, 103865. The carburetor assembly is 50981 DC.
On the air cleaner, it's a pipe (51437 D), 2 connecting hoses 1-3/4"I.D.x2-1/4"long, 8 ply(45251 DA), and four hose clamps (45445 D).
I bet it's not often anybody buys the hose and clamps by part number from their Farmall dealer, mores the pity.
Good luck with your H, I know I love mine,
WM

The H is one sweet tractor if you decide to fix it up. Yes, there is a reason so many were made. Any H carb will work. The distilate carbs had different jets and a drain but shoot, after all these years the jets may have been changed anyway. Aftermarket manifolds are made to fit H, Super H 300 etc. I would have the pipe. Have used manifolds and carbs too.

The Farmall H replaced the popular Farmall F-20. The H was introduced in 1939, and 1939 was also the last year for the F-20. Farms started getting larger after about 1940, so as time went on there were fewer Hs built, and more of the Farmall Ms were built. The manifold did have a 1/4" vacuum port with a pipe plug in it, but this was just above the carburetor. There are also some drain holes cast into the exhaust portion of the manifold. Don't know if that is what you are seeing or not. Don't worry about the correct part number for the carb, there were only two versions, gasoline and distillate, and most of the distillate carbs have been rebuilt with gasoline components, so any carb that will fit an H will work for you. A carburetor for a Super H will not work. The tube from the air cleaner to the carb should be very easy to find also, just about anyone who messes with Farmall Hs will have at least one extra intake pipe. I have rebuilt carburetors when you get to that point.
