I have a problem with thid gear in my super h it doesn,t want to stay in gear. Could it be the gear is worn or the bearings going bad or both? How big of a job is it to replace the gears bearings etc? Does the tractor have to be split to do this? This is a 53 model. Thanks for any and all help. Delbert

Delbert,

Delbert, Take out your shifter lever, check the underside tip for round wear...it should be rectangular with sharp lines. If it is worn it is easily replaced with a better one. A worn tip can be welded and reshaped too. Not a hard job at all. Good luck. Oh, a worn shifter tip will definetly cause the problem you're describing.
(And sometimes it will get stuck in 2 gears).

Could also be as simple as a bent shifter fork.

It would be more difficult but I think You can pull the transmission top without splitting on a Super H. Belly pump would have to be dropped on a Stage I. Without more info it's tough to say what the problem is. Could be worn gears for 50+ years of grinding into 3rd gear...or a worn pilot bearing... or worn pinion bearing at the back of the transmission top shaft. Could be as simple as a broken spring on a shift rail poppet. But since it's mounted on the underside of the tranny top You would have to pull the top anyhow.
