They are taking the sulfer out of the diesel fuel. Our pump & injector people tell us we need to be adding a supplement to eliminate damage to the pumps. Would like to have some input from some of you. thanks in advance.

According to Chevron web site highway diesel must be under 15 ppm at retail outlets by Oct. 15 2005. OFF ROAD, LOCOMOTIVE and MARINE diesel must be under 500 ppm by June 1 2007.

For the ultra low sulphur diesel all the oil companies are adding a lubricity polymer.

Ask your fuel supplier. There is a new SAE test which most states are requiring the oil companies to meet. It is a more stringent test of lubricating properties for diesel than has been required in the past.

There should be no need for the snake oil in addition to what they are adding NOW (not last year).

Have you thought about a blend using biodiesel.

The lubricating factor is higher for biodiesel than straight diesel.

I use a 5% blend and it works good for me.

As farmers I believe we should all consider it.

Some in my area are using 100% biodiesel.

Checkit out.

Gary

As if Fuel prices are not high enough now and for some of the older stuff this may be a big problem and costly to one . I have never been into the snake oil but now it may be nessary to add something to old rotary and plunger style pumps. On the new common rail systems i guess will have to wait and see and pay the price. As far a me sayen what one is best i am not going there thats up to you to decide.

Sulpher content was cut back about 10 years ago and everyone was warning that pumps would not last on the new fuel but it mostly turned out to be about like the Y2K scare on computers. I was driving truck part time then and we did not have any problems whatsoever.

Depending on what truck engine you were driving as the fuel systems are NOT ALL THE SAME and we had a Bunch of Roosa Master pumps fail along with the inline Boshes with scored plungers . So just because the truck you were driving did not have a problem there was a rash of pumps that SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED THAT DID . I spend a lot of time running pumps to the Injection shop to be repaired . And there are still a lot of pumps failing because of lack of Lube.

We had Cummins, Mack, Detroit, and Cat engines and none gave any unusual problems. Was not around many tractors at that time.
