Sadly i neglected to grease the water pump on a M i recently restored. A bearing in pump now continously whistles very loudly. There are two grease fittings on the pump. I could only get grease into the top one and most of it was then flung out onto the fan shroud. What is the difference between these two fittings? Also does this mean i should probably rebuild or get a new pump? Will a bad pump leak coolant? Thanks for your comments.

Kirk has it correct. The bearings in the water pump can be replaced without removing the pump from the tractor. You do however have to remove the radiator to get at things. It's not a bad job once the radiator is off. If you decide to replace the bearings, do the grease seals at the same time and get a couple rings of packing to add to the packing around the pump shaft. The zerk that greases the pump shaft won't take much grease. If you overgrease the one that greases the bearings, you may push the seals out. So...don't force things.

I found it easier to remove the water pump to replace the bearings and packing. I was able to remove the pump from the left side of the tractor, after unbolting the fan and disconnecting the radiator support rod so that the radiator could tilt forward a little.

I suppose it might be easier to remove the pump than to remove the radiator. I have not done this on an M, but have on an I-6, which is easier because the steering shaft does not have to be removed like on the M and the bolster is not in the way. I've never had much luck trying to get to the fan area on these tractors without removing the radiator.

If the bearings are making noise I would just replace them. I had to put new bearings in my M's water pump, they were around $23 each. The front grease fitting supplies grease to the bearings while the other supplies grease to the impeller shaft. If the pump is leaking you may just have to tighten the packing nut (large brass nut on the front of the pump) a little or just replace the packing.

When you grease the water pump always stop when it won't take any more grease, you break the packing if you do. My dad warned me about this many years ago.
