BN not charging

I have been reading archives for days and trying to figure out the charging system problem. My BN has a magneto and lights with a 6 volt pos ground. Am using the 4 post VR. When it runs shows slight discharge. Turn on lights and discharges to almost 15. Lights don't change with throttle change for dim or brightness. Voltage across battery shows 6 with tractor running 3/4 throttle.

This is what I did:
1. Belt is nice and snug
2. Grounds cleaned with sandpaper. Jumper wire to ground made no difference. Ohm meter between VR and Gen and frame reads 0.
3. Wiring is all new and according to John's instructions. I am confident that it is correct.
4. Gen 3rd brush is already set 3 bars from the other one.
5. Ground F terminal on gen while running and no charge.
6. With F term grounded ran jumper from A to Bat and it DID CHARGE to almost 15 on the meter.
7. Remove VR cap and tried to adjust spring to hold set of points closed (made spring tighter) with no change.
8. Layed screwdriver across the coil and points and it DID Charge again.
9. Bought a new VR from tractor supply. Connect battery and polarized it and still no charge

I even read about the guys who said there system didn't charge until running it for awhile then worked. Let it run for awhile with no change. One note: the VR I bought had been opened and I think returned. Could it be bad? Or am I missing something?

I am super frustrated. Please help. Thanks

Update: It works! in reply to BobOHIO, 06-25-2006 06:37:46
After reading posts I went back out and fired it up with the cap off the regulator. Held a screwdriver across the points of the relay and it charged again. Take them off and charging stopped. Was so ticked off just held it on there for about 30 sec solid while my dad watched the ammeter telling me it was charging. When I removed the screwdriver was surprised to hear him say it was still charging. Checked voltage at battery and was 7 bolts. I have no idea what happened. I'm going to try using it this afternoon and wanted to say thanks for all of your help and support. I appreciate it VERY much and couldn't have done it without help. Bob

Surprisingly it was made in the U.S.A. I know most of the import stuff is junk.

Bob, Im thinkin same as Jim here. The VR acts bad and what seems bad is the VR's Cutout Relay coil/relay is NOT PULLING IN. If it dont close, the gennys output cant ever get coupled up to the battery (via relay closing between VR's ARM and BAT terminals) to charge it. Thats why even a dead grounded Field (max charge) is why it still dont charge cuz the genny isnt ever coupled to the battery via the necesary closed set of Cutout Relay contacts.

As Jim explained when the gennys output voltage exceeds that of the battery (from the residual magnetism in the field poles), the cutout rleay is supposed to close (those small high resistacne relay coil windings) and yours dont seem yo ever do that. The genny seems okay since it does allow charge to the battery when you manually close the connection.

Are you sure the VR is compatible with your ground (Pos or Neg)??? If not thats about the only other thing I might suspect. Many VR's are bi polar, some may not be, others still work but the relay contatcs may not last as long. Of course, the gennys needs polarized and if a VR were connected after a battery polarity got reversed but the genny wasnt re polarized to the new polarity, it can harm the VR. (maybe that happened before you got it????)

My votes same as Jims, bad VR so let us know what happens.

The VR on the bottom says 6 Volt POS which I figured to be positive ground. It has a whole bunch of tractors listed and the B was one of them. Thanks

Yes it can certainly be bad. one reason (most) parts stores do not take electrical modules back is because they get toasted by individuals with far less procedural confidence than you. I would say your process is correct. I would use a nail file on the points you jumped to get it to charge, then clean them with a folded dollar bill to get the grit out of them. The spring may need to go back to where it was, beacuse they are supposed to be apart when not running. The residual magnetism makes enough current to pull them in when it is started. (a thin pullin winding in that same relay under the heavy wire). If doing the above does not fix it, I would explain that the reg. you baught was opened and not functional. Good luck.

Jim- I tried cleaning the contacts with my points file already. I didn't clean it with a dollar though, I just blew them out with air. I never knew of a place to take back electrical parts either. The guy told us if there is any problem to return it within 30 days for refund or another part.
