I own a 300 utility and know a little about tractors but not as much as most of you. I have owned it about 6 months. I had a tiller on it this spring and just recently used a 5 ft mower with it. After running hard for a while the engine will start ti sputter or miss. The exhaust is downward and toward the left tire. It is pretty black. Is this blow by? Rings, ? I really like the tractor and will be repainting it this winter and cleaning it up. But will resale in the spring. I know overhauling would never get my money out of it. Thouhgts? I have checked all the fluids and they are ok. I cahnged plugs this spring also. I also need to know what to do with the steering. I thas a leak in the steer gear box and will leak out shortly after filling. No PS and hard to steer to the right. I have jacked it up and tried adjustments for the steering but it does not seem to have any more room to adjust. Is the leak fixable? I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance, Terry

Tune it up...new cap, rotor, plugs, etc. Or maybe an electronic ignition. Our experiance with ours is that the problems are ignition. I dont know that we have ever messed with the carb in 30 years. Your tractor may be different though...

I think the power screw on the front bottom of the carb needs to be screwed in 1/2 turn, then 1/4 turn at a time till it stops making (rich) black smoke. The Steering can be kept from leaking radically by pumping it full of Ford chassis specification Graphite grease (Black as the inside of a cow). It may not help the hard left turn (probably needs rebushed) but it will inprove the lube problem.

I have a 350 U and I was having some problems with it missing after it ran a while. Is your tractor charging? With a six volt system it needs all the electrical power it can get. Make sure your tractor is charging. Second, see how the cap and rotor look. Mine would run fine for an hour then develope a dead miss under load. Tuned up the ignition system and it ran fine.
