350U PTO Adjustment and General Bush Hog Questions

First, I am having trouble adjusting my PTO. I have a manual and followed the instructions in the manual, but between the clevis distance on the back of the handle and the two adjustment bolts on the PTO. If I get it adjusted so the PTO stops when the handle is down, it does not spin fast enough when engaged, even at full throttle. It I get it adjusted to it has adequate speed to operate the bush hog, I cannot get it to stop spinning when the handle is down. The manual is just not very helpful in this area.

So, I want to use the bush hog, so I set it so the operating speed is adequate, even though it does not disengage. I know this is not a good idea, but I need to see how it works. I have a 350 Utility with a 6' Bush Hog Squealer. Mowing about 4' of grass and weeds, it seems to bog down very easily. Here is how it went,

1) put it in first gear
2) ride the clutch because even first is too fast for the bush hog
3) move forward until bush hog bogs down
4) stop and wait for bush hog to get back up to speed
5) repeat process

Granted, the grass and weeds were thick, but there were no saplings or anything with any diameter. It was a slow process; took over an hour to mow the 1 acre lot. I don't know if is because the PTO is not adjusted properly, or because I have not mastered the technique of bush hogging.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Joe

I THINK YOUR BANDS ARE SLIPPING.ONE TIME MY 300 UTILITY PTO STARTED TO SLIP AS I STARTED TO BALE HAY.I FOUND THE HANDLE /LEVER MOUNTING BOLTS HAD COME LOOSE.THE PTO ON THIS TRACTOR HAD NEVER SLIPPED BEFORE OR SINCE IN 7000+ HRS.IT STOPS INSTANTLY WHEN I TURN IT OFF;IN FACT THE SWINGING KNIVES ON THE BUSHHOG WILL SWING INTO EACH OTHER IT STOPS SO QUICK.
I HAVE BUSHHOGGED WHAT YOU DESCRIBE IN 2ND GEAR WITH MY 300 MANY TIMES (OLD 6' WOODS CADET 72 BUSHOG),ALTHO 1ST GEAR IS EASIER,BUT I DON T HAVE TO STOP.YOUR PTO IS SLIPPING FOR WHATEVER REASON.

Sharp blades make a world of difference.

Are both clutch bands in good condition? Possibly a bearing bad somewhere? 4 feet tall grass is a pretty good load for even a 60 HP tractor[assuming you are cutting down to 1 foot or maybe a little less]. Try taking a half width cut & see how it pulls. You use a lot of power grinding all that material up.

Make sure the back of the brush hog is slightly higher than the front. If it's lower you cut the weeds as you come in to them, then as the blade swings to the bach you are trying to cut it stll shorter, so in effect you are cutting the full circle when you should only be cutting partial circle. This is the most common cause of not enough poweer complaints. Park the rig on a flat surface and measure blades to ground clearence front & back. You don't need much - 1/4" higher in back is good enough.
