Farmall A keeps stalling out

My A has started stalling out and not wanting to restart after running for a short while. Usually while going uphill. It's getting plenty of gas down the line. If I wait about 15 minutes it starts right up. It's acting like there's a vapor lock, however I don't believe these gravity feed systems can do that can they. It did this first about two weeks ago and now seems to do it sooner each time. Looking for ideas.

Randy

better drain the gas tank and service the sediment bowl. The screen on the elbow at the carb mite also need cleaned. Then you will know for sure your problem is not fuel. When it stops do you have fire at the plug. Just pull #1 wire off and put a spare plug on the end ground it and turn engine over to see if you have fire. You have to determine if it is fire or fuel.

Look in the tank with a bright flashlight & see what is on the bottom of it. Anything could be causing an intermittent blockage.

First make sure you have gas flow to the carb. Mine was doing the same thing. didn't have to be much of an incline. I still have not found the problem, but usually i adjust the carb and it settles down.i also get carbon out the exhaust after that. how long since it has had a complete tuneup. points may be getting bad or condenser weak.plugs, wires. May not do it again for a month or longer at times. i just keep tinkering till it stops stalling. i have pretty good luck when it starts to stall to push the clutch in and give it throttle till is clears up.I keep it wound up when mowing. Feller i bought it from lugged it for 20 years.

Here's the rub--I just rebuilt this mag with a new coil and condenser, although I suspect one or the other may be weak since when the tractor is hot and I stop it, I often can't restart it until it cools down, however I've never had the tractor stall from a bad coil, even with the old coil which was truly fried.

I'm suspecting carburetion on the stall, may need to boil it out

Mine was doing that and it turned out to be a piece of an old gasket in the gas tank. It would occasionally get sucked on top of the gas outlet in the tank and would stop; after sitting for a bit the gasket would float off, and it would start and run fine again until the next time.

There was a lot of tree bark in that tank too...50 years of checking the gas level by putting a stick down in the tank.

Could be an obstructed gas tank cap vent.

Good luck,
Bill

Thanks Bill, that's something I wouldn't have thought of. God knows what's in that tank by now.

Other than a fuel problem another angle is if the coil is getting bad. When they get warmed up the spark peeters out until they cool down then they work again. But if you have a mag then forget the whole idea. I can't explain the going up hill part with this other than just by pure coincidence.

It's starving for gas - mine does that when the tank is low & I go up a steep hill. With a full tank it is OK. I plan on rebuilding my carb and making sure the jets are clean and adjusted right.
