I just bought a U-6 and I wanna know what head is on it. I know it's an M engine thats what I bought it for. The original numbers were ground off the Block and Head. On the block someone stamped new #'s on it and they are 6943. (I have an M that has a block like this to but it's not the right one.) I can still read a little of the old head # the first # is an 8 and the last letters are DA, I just need to fill the middle. Also on the head theres (5 18 W). I dunno if any of this helps or not but I'm sure lost. Oh yeah on the U-6 serial number theres- UBK 6826, also it takes a 3 bolt starter. A year of this thing would be great to. Thanks a bunch Mike

if the cylinder head is also factory remanufactured the numbers should be stamped on the spark plug side near the top.

6943 is a replacement block # for a M. 5-18-W indicates head was cast May 18 1951.Can't help much with head unless you would happen to know the total valve steam length. Almost all of the heads for that engine started with the # 8 . Not positive but think you can rule out head # 8060 gasoline head because the suffix had avanced past DA by 51. That leaves low compression and maybe 8574 gas head. Looking at combustion chamber or valve length can tell if its gasoline or other head. Should be a date code on engine block also.

Check under the valvecover for a casting number, that will tell all. The original serial numbers were removed/changed when it was rebuilt by IH.
