Hey Allan - Too high of oil pressure?

If memory serves me, you mentioned one time that a high oil pressure was a symptom of something on these old Farmall tractors, in this case a 1943 H.

The thing pretty much pegs on startup and stays there. I haven't tried a different guage yet, but that's on my list.

I think I may have bought one of your famous "project" tractors with this one. Wasn't intentional, lol.

Factory spec on H and M was 75 psi for the relief valve. My rebuilt H runs 70 psi all day with 5w-40 Mobil Delvac. Once it's warmed up and idling really slow it will come down to 35 psi.

Jay,

Sounds like it is a symptom of a very healthy engine to me. Every tractor I've ever had "pegs the gauge and stays there".

If you're worried about it, I'd put a mechanical gauge on it to see what is really going on. I wouldn't worry about it unless it is up over around 80 psi. Most gassers normally run in at 60 and the diesels 75-80 lbs.

I've always set up LP irrigation engines with industrial bearings at 80 lbs also when using Murphy switches. However, get any higher and you can start to see signs of "washing" at the babbit.

Good luck with your project,

Allan

for the IH tractors of the 40s/50s, the oil pressures should be:

A,B,C,H,M,etc Gas: 70-75psi
Diesels: 45psi
Cub: 30-35psi

Any tractor that loses a fair amount of oil pressure after warming up, has a serious problem with oil clearances, and should be repaired before some major damage occurs. After an engine rebuild which includes a reground crank W/bearings, Camshaft bearings, Block cleaning, new oil pressure regulating spring and valve, none of my engines will lose pressure when warm. I also use the oil that IH specifies, 30W Low Ash oil.

What is that? I've never heard that before.

My guage only goes up to 45. I think it was the babbit washing that I was thinking about.

I bought this tractor last fall because the price was right. I'm not so sure I should have :) Oh well, it has the fenders I've been looking for, lol.

I agree with Rusty. Before you do anything else swap the existing oil gage with a known good gage.

It's not unusual for a bad gage to peg the needle at lower than rated pressure.

That is what I was planning on doing, swapping with a good one. I think they are cheap enough, I'll probably just put on a new one and be done with it.

Thanks for your help guys.

Oil pressure that is extremely high can be damaging, but I would sure try a different guage before coming to conclusions.
