I hear you I have been so busy this spring with mags I just got my soy beans and corn in last week we have had some real humid days here and two good rains both have sprouted and are about 2" high I know its late and it sure wont be knee high by the 4th of July but hey its going to grow. The real kicker will be to see how long I have before its to high to spray with my little rig. I have not got a first cutting in either. I like to wait till the fawns are big enough to see or run another week or two they will be big enough so I dont cut there legs off. I wish I had the time and patience to listen for the corn to grow. BTW did any one see the news report about selling stills to use to make your own ethenol. The gov said its ok to make moonshine at I think 190 proof for gas but they want you to poison it so no one will drink it. A still for one man was a couple grand they can barley keep up with orders. Sounds like a good bussines to me. I can come up with the Corn

When I was in Greece last year, I heard that the US farmers had developed a 4 legged chicken without feathers for KFC!

t.r.y., Allan is surenough right on this. In the Oklahoma panhandle where I farmed. On rare occurences when it rained, and the irrigation wells were shut down. Also one would need a break in the wind too. Anyway the little popping sounds that the growth joint would make is music to a Corn Farmer.
The popping sound or the sound of an ear of corn being shucked as Allan said is neat especially when one hasn't heard it before. I will say I have heard it in the day some but more in eaarly morning and late afternoon / early evening. Later,
John A.

Yep,

Anybody that says ya can't hear corn grow has never stood in the middle of 33,000 plants per acre on a hot humid night. :>)

Howdy fellers,The corn and beans I planted last week germinated quicker than lightning. They are both over 3 inches tall.I think all the thunder and lighning has "shook em awake".Oh I know about lightning releasing nitrogen into the air,but does anybody know exactly how beneficial that is,or is does it give just enough to green everything up a little? The 105 tomato plants I planted are doing great too. They have shown quite a bit of growth since they were planted last week.I also have 96 cabbage sets out,48 bell pepper plants,48 banana pepper plants,24 jalapeno peppers,I also planted 4 different kinds of sweet corn-silver queen, ambrosia, super sweet hybrid, and peaches and cream hybrid.Planted 10 rows of stringless bush beans. And 10 rows of good ole fashioned pole beans just for the old die hard string beaners. All the rows in my truck patch are 75 feet long, and last year I grew more than I had time to sell so this year moms gonna pitch in and help me sell it and I will pay her 30 percent to do it for me.Plus I will tip her with vegetables whenever she needs them.Oh yeah I planted a bunch of crookneck squash, zucchini, boston pickling cucumbers, hite spine cucmbers,a couple dozen rows of field corn Im going to run through an old John Deere sheller this fall.Figuiredon belting it up to my H and see what happens....RBF

RBF: One of my former neighbors once said, "You should be able to demonstrate you have a 100 customers for each zuchini seed you plant, before planting." He figured that should be the law. What he didn't realize was even the most novice of gardeners could grow zuchini.

Allan: Your right, one season I planted corn on 3 sides of my dad's house. He always said there was not much closer to nature than corn growing on a hot humid night. He was 65 at the time so maybe a much younger person wouldn't have noticed. He even entertained guests on the patio listening to corn. For the non believers he had a stake in corn just 50' from patio, with a ribbon at end of each days growth. I forget the record day but believe it was in the 6 to 8 inch range.

I was busy enough, I really didn't get into the details, but dad sure had a lot of fun with folks on this one. I know he had photos of that stake with the ribbons on it. They are probably in that box of family photos my mum gave me, that I've never taken the time to look through.

Yes,

I used to have 2am water set changes and I'd listen to it while I was waiting to make sure all was well with my set.

Sounds just like someone is shuckin' sweet corn, only kind of slow, sporadic and farther away. :>)

Never heard it in the daytime; don't think it grows in the daytime, does it? Just takes in water and sunlight; then grows at night?

Allan

Allan: Wind and breeze factor on the leaves during the day, you just don't hear it. Corn's speed of growth is directly related to temperature and humidity. The only time it shuts down conpletely is below 50F.
