I tore apart my brake housing to replace some seals today (I"m hoping to seal all the leaks to get around to paint it) and while I had everything apart, I decided to see if I could chuck the Bull pinion shaft. Well, it chucked, about 1/8 of an inch i"d roughly guess. I need to put a dial indicator or it to really know. My point is, How much can a person allow? I"ve been driving it around occasionally since I got it running this spring, and it dosen"t drive funky with any kind of jerking or anything else. The IH book only says to check and repair bearings to set standards but dosen"t list any. And, if I should replace them, do I have to tear the Axle housing off to do it? The book makes It look that way. My hour meter only reads about 4600 hours, that"s low compared to some I"ve heard of on the internet and in books. Of course, I don"t know how many times It"s rolled over. Are there other 806"s out there just as worn out or worse still goung strong with no problems? Or is this something I should be really worried about? Taking the rear axles off to replace the worn bearings on the bull gear shafts just about committs me to a rear end overhaul. I"m scared to find out what that will cost. I need some guys with lots more expirence than myself to explain this one out. Thanks so much. Andy

Do you realize when the brake housing is not bolted to the piston housing and the rear frame that the piston housing can move away and loosen the bearing preload? Put in short bolts in the piston housing and check for movment. There are shims behind the piston housing that you can take out to preload the bearings. Just don't overdo it. Being loose does not mean the bearing are bad. Normal wear is common.

Now i am not sure what your sayen here . There is some play back and forth when ya have things tore down and unless ya find pices and parts or ya have a bunch of up and down movement the put your new seals in and put it back together and don't worry about it . My 806 is pushen real hard to the 9000 hour mark and i have had to replace one brake seal since i have had it and last fall was the first time that i ever had the valve cove off and believe it to have been the org.gskt. and think it was the first time that the valve were adjusted . Don't go looken for things to tare apart it will let ya know when ya need to do so . Other then putting in clutches and T/A's and every once in awhile and engine overhaul they are one tough tractor.
