Just purchased an IH Model #UV549, serial #4963 industrial engine w/Rockford clutch. Can anyone tell me the year and whether or not I have a good engine. I also need a part for the over center clutch and found that this has a rare 2" shaft versus the newer 2 1/4 shaft. Is there a good source of used parts for these and who would I contact? Thanks in advance. We are also looking at changing this over to propane.

It sounds like the old power units. They were set up several ways - anything from just the engine to including raditor and clutch and anything in between. Look on the flywheel housing for a serial number tag it should also have a "LQ" number which will tell the modifications made to standard unit.

From the number I'd say it sounds like it's the old 549 cu in gas engine. Was put in a LOT of trucks in it's day. Very popular before the diesels took over in heavy trucks.

I think the block was also the basis for the 9 liter diesel used in trucks and the DV-550 used in 1468 & 1568 tractors.

As I recall, IH quit making gas truck engines around 1975 or '76.

Maybe somebody else could say for sure.

You're pretty close, Best I can determine, IH used the LV-series engines from late '56 production ['57 MY] thru '79 MY. They continued the SV's [304, 345, 392] thru the '83 MY.

Not sure about power unit serial numbers, but with a low serial number it might be a fairly early model. Lot of 'em were used out west, I hear, on irrigation pumps and such...and a lot of 'em were set up to run on propane, but I'm not certain if it was propane from the factory or a conversion.
