How far out can you safely adjust the pressure plate fingers bolts on a SM? Suggestions would be appreciated.

The clutch pedal doesn't seem to be moving the fingers far enough to work the pressure plate. The movemnet on the fingers is very slight.

It doesn't take much. If the fingers are adjusted right, and the pedal free travel is adjusted right, and the clutch won't release, there is probably something wrong with the clutch, like lining has come loose and is wedged against the flywheel. Pedal free travel takes all the slack out of the system and is the proper way to adjust the clutch.

You can change the clutch plate but not the pressure plate in a SM without splitting the tractor.

Have you messed with the pressure plate settings?

I have an M. The pressure plate and friction plate came out no problem with the tractor together. The Fly wheel on the hand wouldn't come out until I split the tractor. Is there something different between the SM and the M, just curious.

The SM and maybe some late M's have a bigger clutch which the books say will not allow the pressure plate to be removed.

No I haven't messed with the pressure plate fingers yet. When I got the tractor the clutch adjustment had the threaded rod under the clutch adjusted way in to where there is about an inch and a half of thread showing. I dropped the pump thinking there had to be something wrong. When I push in on the clutch, using a pipe wrench on the rod arm, there is very little pressure transfering to the fingers. Maybe I should have adjusted the clutch first.

I'm curious as to why you want to deviate from the recommended settings.

The finger settings are not "clutch adjustment" but are pressure plate adjustment and don't affect how much lockup you get with the pressure plate.

My two reasons are as follows; 1.One time I bought a rebuilt clutch and pressure plate. I installed it and it wouldn't work, so I adjusted the fingers on the plate out and it worked. 2.When I look at the amount of travel on another M, it seems to move the fingers further. Are you saying that the clutch plate must be bad and changing the finger setting won't help? Also can you change the clutch and pressure plate on the first year SM through the belly pump opening?

Does the clutch work?

I'm not saying anything about it because I can't see it, but until you adjust the pedal free travel you don't really know what you have.

If I understand what you are saying, the rod is adjusted shorter so you may have a LOT of free travel. Someone may have been trying to accomodate a weak leg or may have just not known how to adjust the clutch.
