New battery this year. New Voltage Regulator last year. Just ran it in Memorial Day Parade. Now Starter won't turn over. No click. No nothing. There is a hefty spark it seems near the positive ground when I pull the starter switch. I hear the spark but cannot see it. Had this tractor 3 years. Always was a quick cold start. Not sure if I have a short somewhere or if my starter is what I should be looking at. Any help would be appreciated.

Turns out the positive ground cable mount was the culprit. I cleaned and reinstalled all metal contacts and she fired right up! Thanks again for your help.

Extra thought. We had trouble with our SC ground cable where it attached to the light & steering wheel casting. As I recall, the cable grounded through the battery box, & was hard to get tight[ not too much room in there]. Just snake a new cable out to a convenient ground bolt on the frame.

Thanks guys a whole bunch. As a "weekend warrior" I will have to get that in between the weather and my regular job (which at the moment is searching for a good job). Anyway, great advice. great forum. I'll let you know how she responds to that lil' bit of attention".

Scott, I would FIRST remove, clean n wire brush, and reattach each n every battery and starter and starter switch and cable AND ESPECIALLY the ground connection. If the ground is loose or corroded or carboned up, it can cause what you described. If the ground cable is to any thin or rusty piece of sheet metal, reattach it direct to a good frame type bolt for a better frame ground connection.

That spark sounds like a loose or carboned connection to me, theres a good chance thats the culprit so remove n wire brush n clean n reattach n see what happnes.

Once alllll ll cables n connections n grounds n starter switch terminal are clean and tight and IF THE BATTERY IS OKAY????? , turn any lights on or attach a voltmeter or test lamp on the battery n try n start her. If the voltage drops drastically and/or any lights dim drastically, the starter could be bad or the engine stuck or the starter drive simply mechanically stuck, but if the voltage dont drop or any lights dim when you try n crank her, then I would suspect the starter switch if all else is okay.

You sure the battery is okay and full charged??? maybe have a shop load test it or try a known good substitute battery.

CHECK THAT FRAME GROUND CONNECTION AND GROUND CABLE TO BATTERY POST CONNECTION !!!!! !!!!!

I would suspect the starter switch mounted on top of the starter. Disconnect the battery cable from the starter and then remove the switch by taking out the two small screws. Tip it over and look at the big bronze contact, clean it up with sand paper and also the nib on the top of the starter. Reassemble everything and give it a try. Bet she will start right up. If that bronze piece is badly pitted or worn down, you may not be making a good solid hit on the nib on top of the starter. Prolly should just replace the switch if this is the case. Your dealer should have it stock. G'luck!

Check both battery terminals & clean them up well. then reinstall & tighten securely. if this doesn't help, Check the ground connection. You have a loose connection somewhere.
