I am about to pull the head off a 460 diesel. It is leaking/spraying coolant between the head and block on the injector side.

It looks like there are 2 rows of head bolts. One row is under the valve cover. The other row is on the outside of the valve cover on the injector side. Does that sound right? I haven't done this before and don't have a manual. Just wanted to verify that before I started removing the bolts.

For now, I am going to pull it off with the exhaust manifold and intake manifold still attached. Thanks

That sounds correct Smith. I just did the head on my 560D there is a specific pattern to tightening the bolts back down that you need to follow or you will have the same problem again. You should also buy new head bolts, due to stretching of the old ones.. they are expensive.

Thanks Rob. I'll go ahead and remove the head. Didn't want to start removing bolts that did not need to be removed. I wonder if I could match the bolts up to new ones at the hardware store--good quality steel ones?

I probably need to rotate the engine to top-dead-center, #1 cyl. I haven't done that yet. I'll be careful on the re-torquing of the head and the pattern. I saw that posted on this website in an old message. Thanks.
