Tired TA Advice

The TA on my 826 is marginal. As I posted a while back, on occasion, when I pull it back into low, it doesn't lock up. OK, I know it needs replacement but there isn't room in the budget this year and I need to get another fall tillage season out of it. I'm trying to calculate my odds and the best way to hedge my bet. The basic question: is the safer just to leave it in high and pretend it's "just another tractor?" I'm not asking for absolutes, merely some educated guesses and perspective from guys used to nursing tired tractors along.

Jim - Dad and I had a 1256 with no TA at all from the factory. So, I had not choice when plowing, leveling, discing , etc. I would go in 4 and LO, or 1 and HI range ...normally for field work.
Dad loved it because of no TA repairs to do, but with our 856 having the TA, I missed it. Both were great tractors, and I miss 'em !!
I do have another good 856 tho, and 2 350 Farmalls with the TA, and I always am looking for more great Farmalls !! Ha ha ....

Gents, I appreciate the advice. I think I can cobble up the means to check MVC pressure (I have a 4000 psi gauge). As I said, the problem is intermittent, and not necessarily right after I take it out of long storage. In the last 10 hours of work it did it twice... pull it back into low, tractor stops. Both times, I immediately pressed in the clutch, shifted back up to high and I had action again. When I try low again immediately, both times it worked. Send me good vibes that I don't end up halfway through my tillage work with a tractor dead in the field!

Jim: Given your description and the advice given, I'm not so sure your TA is tired. There is hydraulic function involved with these large chassis tractors as it applies to TA. Lack of use will make all hydraulics a bit sluggish. If I were you I'd tend ot use the TA more often, not less. Allan summed it up, that did ocasionally happen as far back as the 1970s, most often after the tractor had been parked all winter.

Jim I don't see the hydraulics having much to do with this, because when you go to the low side the sprag clutch has to lock up which is machanical there for the sprag clutch should drive the tractor without any hydraulics. On the other hand if the sprag clutch fails it should be ok on the high side if the hydraulics are ok.
You might use it longer if you use it to split gears and leave it in low as to shaft it, but yes you maybe looking at a rebuild.

I guess there might be two schools of thought on that issue. In this part of the country the TAs were really never necessary in the first place, so when the low side quit working most guys just put it in the high side and forgot about it, and as far as I know never had any trouble because of it.

Jim,

I'd use it as normal until it finally fails if it is ever going to. I think "not" using the thing is the worst to do.

My 966 will miss a shift on occasion if I lift the hitch, pull a remote, crank hard on the steering and hitting a brake all at the same time.

Heck, the tractor is 30 years old and I'll still bet that T/A will outlast me. :>)

Allen your problem is either in the MCV pump or ya need a new spring kit in the MCV . Run a pressure check and if ya can have someone flowrate the MCV pump and replacve it i think it is low flow rate on yours and the other guy RUN IT TILL IT DIES .

Thanks Vet,

I've suspected that for some time. I notice that if I keep the revs up, the problem shows it's head less.

I think both pumps are just plain tired. The other pump don't wanna do anything til I bring the revs up. :>)
