Years ago, as a kid, i watched my dad remove the ring gears on several Ford and Ferguson tractors after splitting them. I can't remember how he removed the ring from the flywheel. Would I be correct in saying that he heated it with a torch? Is there a better and safer way today? i am talking mid to late 50s when this was happening.

We heat with a torch evenly around. It drops off then put it right back on flipped over (no new gear). The starter only meshes on one side, so the other side is most often like new.

This is great information. I really appreciate all who replied. It will be a great help. I did remember the way you install one, so maybe my mind is only half gone. By the way, I am working on a 1948 H which my Mom's 1st cousin bought new. Runs great, just needs some of those worn things taken care of. THANKS AGAIN

I used my die grinder and a cut off wheel to cut through the old ring gear. It will pop when you get a portion of the way through so be ready.

Heated the new one on the gas bbq grill and slid it on.

Easy

Drill almost all the way thru it.. then split with a chissle... heat new one and drop on.. allow to air cool.. don't quench.

A few good solid blows with a hammer and large punch will take it right off. To install the new ring gear, heat it to 350 degrees evenly. I have done this with a torch, but an hour in a 350 degree oven would heat it perfectly even and it will slide right on.

you do not need to heat it, you need to just drive it off with a large punch and a good sized hammer.

I would say that thats the best way but I have heard others talk about baking them in the oven also. You will need to heat the new one to install also. MagMan

You can remove them by splitting the ring with a chisel, but you need to heat the new ring to expand it so it will fit over the flywheel. I have heard of placing the new ring in the oven for awhile, never tried it that way.

The wife's oven works GREAT. Just make sure she has the credit cards and send her to WaldoWorld for a while.

Or, better still do what I did and scarf up a kitchen stove and put it in a corner of the shop, just for this use.
