Hey all,

I really need a steel flywheel on my M, so I am curious if I will have to split it. From what I have read, I found it is possible to change the clutch on an M by removing the belly pump. However, I am also wondering if the flywheel will come out the bottom as well.

I am also curious if any of you know an affordale source to get a steel flywheel.

Thanks,

Chris

Yes, vet hit the nail on the head. This is a turbocharged M engine and I plan to get 3K RPM out of it with a long term goal of 5k with some extensive longblock work.

I will have to talk to a local machinist and see if he would be interested in doing it. I have a split stand I can borrow, so that will probably be where I go when I can find a source for a flywheel.

I would agree with the Tractor Vet on having one made. Here's DACO Inc, a company in IL that machines flywheels. Their web site is>Link

You can contact Modocar Auto Accessories at 1-888-818-8318 too. You probably would need to send the old flywheel to them. Hal

If you've ever swapped an M clutch you'll remember you have to twist it to get it out. I'd be very surprised if you could get a flywheel out, it will hit the curved part of the bell housing before you get it turned far enough to drop through teh opening.

Well we have them made , use to be a guy around here that did them for us but he closed his doors shorty after i close my doors . So if ya have a local machine shop and can get a slug of SEMA or what ever they call it certified steel then it ain't that big of a deal to make one . Now as for the rest of ya all I H flywheels are a CAST IRON and realy not suited for much over stock RPM's because they have hairline cracks from age and heat and they can come unglued like one big HAND GERNADE.

you are saying, I guess, that for those guys who are in competition with their tractors, that over speeds will cause this result...I would suspect that ordinary speed with an ordinary tractor would not cause difficulty?????

No, it is find in a normal farm or slightly over stock RPM situation.

To be honest, I am not 100% convinced that they are really as weak as everyone says, but I am still going to go through the safety precautions.

That flywheel is very heavy, even if there was room for it to come out the bottom, you would never be able to hold on to it. The only way to replace the flywheel is to split the tractor.

Is your M's current flywheel made from cardboard or something? I thought they were all made from steel.

The last cardboard flywheel in an M was serial number FBK 499.

To my knowledge they never put cardboard flywheels in the Super M.

I am a little lost here. What is the flywheel made out of that you have?

The current flywheel is a stock cast iron piece. The problem is that they are very heavy, not balanced, and only held by three bolts. The basically means they are prone to break the center out and come loose from the crankshaft. That that point they can also cut the tractor in half which poses some obvious problems :).
