I was raking hay yesterday when a wrench in the tool box under the fuel tank next to the starter bounced over and shorted on the lead from the battery.

Tractor died and I was on a hill so I unhooked the rake and tried to coast down the hill to start it.

No fire what so ever but turned over good.

Could it have fried the alt. also?

Or was the battery so dead and not enough speed to get the alt. going?

Yes I have it switched to a 6 volt alt.

Just wondering before I try to jump it today.

Gary

There’s certainly a chance the short at the battery toasted the alternator. However the engine should still start/run even if the alternator is bad.

What I suspect happened is the brief short damaged the wiring somewhere between the starter switch, ammeter and ignition switch

First thing I'd do disconnect/tape the wire a the BAT terminal on the regulator (in case the alternator has suffered from shorted diode or something). Then charge the battery and try starting the tractor.

If it still won't fire turn the ignition on and check for voltage at the ignition side of the coil primary (the side NOT connected to the distributor). If voltage is present the tractor should run - the "no fire" problem is elsewhere. However if no voltage is seen, you’ve got to find/repair a break in the wiring to the coil.

Good luck!

I would hook a battery charger to the battery and see if it will charge. Even if the alternator was damaged, the tractor should start with a fully charged battery. Once you have a fully charged battery check for battery voltage at your coil with the ignition switch on. If the tractor starts hook your volt meter leads across the battery terminals and run the engine at 3/4 throttle. Should have around 7.5 volts. Most auto machine shops can repair your alternator if it doesn't charge. Hal
PS: Here's a web site for 6 volt alternators.

Make sure battery connections are good & check for voltage at alternator output terminal. An intermittent short like that could have caused an internal regulator to go bad if the alternator is so equipped. Is the alt. a Delco , or is it a Motorola? Or something else.
