I just got a 424 diesel, and the head gasket appears to be blown. I am not familar with IH, and I am not extremly mechanical minded. Could someone give me some advice wether I should tear into it or have some one else do it.

jlow,

The 424 diesel is a pretty simple engine to work one. Get a shop manual for the torque "specs" and valve settings, or email me and I'll forward that info to you, if you are going to do this before you have time to get a manual. Have the head checked for cracks and "flatness" before putting it back on.

Could I ask you a favor?

I have a 424 diesel, and the battery is mounted in a non-standard location. I have a parts book, which shows a couple of battery trays, but not how (and where) they mount on the tractor chassis.

Could you post, or email me a photo of the battery mounting area, or at least reply with a verbal description?

Does your tractor have power steering? Mine has add-on power steering, which I want to change to a better system. I am in northern ND, and these little utilities are very UNCOMMON up here. If anyone knows of a parts yard that may have a PS front axle, please let me know.

Bob,

On my 2424 (industrial version 424), the battery box is mounted just inside the left fender above the axle. Tool box is in the same place on the other side, inside the right fender above axle. But I don"t know if the farm model is the same....

My battery is mounted on a shop-built platform just ahead of the driver's right foot.

The parts book shows the LH fender battery mounts for the industrials, and shows another battery support without any referance to where it goes... perhaps in that same location, but I can't be sure from the parts drawings.

I do have the tool box in the RH fender.

Also, there is an alternate set of fenders shown for a different wheel spacing that don't have the "pockets" in either of them.

Can you read and understand a manual and do you have the needed tools to do the job like a real good torque wrench and assorted hand tools and feeler gauges then it can be a DIY as it is not that hard to do if ya can read and understand a book . Now one thing that i would do is have the head checked for flatness at a good machine shop and while the head is off then have the valves done and head checked for cracks , ya may not like what ya find but that is all part of the game of playen with this old stuff .
