Just boght my first H, has a bad rod bearing. Called my IH dealer to order a new set, and he asked me what size. How do I tell? Everything looks pretty standard, but I know that's not enough info. He saud to check numbers on rods? Input is very much appreciated!

If the rod bearing is bad, most likely the crankshaft journal is bad, and the engine needs to be torn down and the crankshaft reground, if you want a repair that will last.

If, by some odd chance the crank is acceptable, you need to determine what size it is... standard, or an "undersize".

The old bearing insert will be stamped on the backside with "STD", ".001", ".010", ".020", etc.

Also, the journal can (and should be) checked with a micrometer for size, and "out of round".

Thanks Bob.

The crank seems to be ok. Did the thumbnail test on it, and I can't catch on anything. I know thats not the best method, but am on a very limited budget. The bearing that came out was awfully bad, should I pull another one to get the number from it?

It is stamped on the outside of the bearing near the ends. If the bearing is worn all the way through enough to obliterate the stamping the crank is probably blue.

just pulled the piston out and can see the bottom of the rod better, it's roughed up pretty good. like just the outside of the bearing went bad? the crank still seems ok. may have made my mind up for me about overhauling everything though.

Looks like you spun a bearing. No wonder you couldn't read the size.
