Somewhere and I cannot find it now, there was a response to an oil pressure question. Someone responded that the relief valve is in the pump and that shims were used from some purpose. Will you please post additonal details about the shims and how you do it. I have an oil pump torn down here and I did not see any...maybe cause I lost them. ????

HEY TOM, I just rebuilt my H last year the same as you are doing. I took two pumps apart and there were no gaskets in either. So I would not worry about gaskets if yours did not have any. The relief valve is a spring and a plunger or holder. You can try to get it new if you want. In the past as the pump wore they probly took the shims or gaskets out to compensate. Do the measure ment or take to a machine shop and have them take a look. If you can find a shop that builds stock car motors and machine shop like I did you will find everything out you need. JON

I rebuilt mine, the gears had worn into the cover quite badly. I took the cover off, put it on a surface grinder to grind it flat. Headspace has a big effect of pressure. The gears, due to pressure, will always wear into the cover. Then I put it back, I took out all the shims, because I measured the gear length and it was short. I ground down the body untill I had .001 clearance between the gears and the cover. I Have had excellent pressure. It has been 10 years, but I don't remember the pressure relief valve?

Quoting from the H service manual -- I have not done this--: "Gaskets between the body and cover are .006 inches thick; use these as shims to obtain .003-.005-inch end play of the drive shaft when assembled. Idler shaft should be concentric with body bore and square with the bottom of the gear chamber within .001 inch." In other words you use gaskets as necessary to get the proper clearance. If the pump was working ok to begin with, put the same number of new gaskets in as you took out--I'm not the expert on this. Further info is in the service manual, too much for my slow typing. The relief valve itself should still be available from Case-IH.

I don't think there are shims in the pump relief system. The spring (as far as I ever encountered) is not usually stressed in use letter series use such that it requires shimming. The pump body ro gear clearances, and end cover clearances are very important. There may be one washer used as a spring seat, but the parts book would show it. Others may have more info. JimN
