Question - Power Sonic Battery

I bought a new deepcycle battery formy small motorhome....I have hade it for about a month, so I decided to put a charge on it as I will be going to the Red Power Show this week..... well let me tell you...I connected the pos. clip on and when I went to connect the NEG. the fire flew like no get out..... .The battery is not yet connected to anything and the charger was right.....the leads was right.....I am afraid of it! ! ! What do you think ? its a :Power Sonic...model PS-121100 B...12v 110AMP...380 watts per cell...cost $117.....Don

It is very possible that the battery is charged backwards. (some may disagree, but it could be labeled wrong, or just charged backwards) It would be very unlikely to find dangerous voltage in there, but the wrong polarity will definatly ruin a charger. There is also a possibility that the charger is shorted internally. Try it on a different battery, and wiggle the wires. The battery polarity can be chacked with a volt meter easily Red on +, black on - if the volts read correctly, I would suspect the charger.
That battery will turn 3/8 solid copper rod to molten slag if shorted. Be careful.
