I don"t have any throttle adjustments on my Farmall A. When I push the throttle lever ahead for full throttle the engine only speeds up to about half speed. I took the governor apart thinking I had a broken or unhooked spring but everything looked ok. There does seem to be some play in the governor arms as there is movement before I feel tension from the spring. Could it be possible someone put the wrong spring in the governor? How could I tell?

You could have needle bearings rusted or tight on the "output" shaft of the governor.

Disconnect the arm that goes from the governor to the carburator throttle on the left side of the engine by taking the pin out of the clevis.
Push the governor control to full speed.
Pull the linkage that goes to the carburator to full open on the throttle. The holes in the linkage should line up. If they don't, adjust the clevis until they do.

If you can't get the clevis in position, then something is maybe set wrong in the governor. get a copy of the IH service manual, there is a cutaway view of the governor in there that you can use to get it right. There is also a set-up procedure to follow.

Parts are available from Case/IH. I just completely rebuilt one over the past winter.

Thanks for the info Red Dave but I have already tried that and that adjustment seems to be fine. I still don't have any throttle adjustments. It will idle on low throttle but as you put the throttle ahead one notch at a time the engine does not speed up until about the last 2 notches and then it speeds up to about half the throttle is should be and once in awhile it will surge at that speed. I did adjust that surge screw on the bottom of the governor and that did help the surge but still no throttle. Please help!!!

If everything external is OK, and the carburator linkage is OK, then you will have to go inside the governor and figure out what is wrong.

It's not all that complicated, the Blue Ribbon Service manual or a parts book has a good illustration of it. I rebuilt one recently and found that the Case/IH dealer had parts available.
