Needing info on the origional painting of the M farmall. My father was and IH dealer when I was growing up, of which I have a Super M that has never been sold from the dealership. I also have a M and a MTA that I am planning to restore. My question is, was the tractors painted disasembled or were they they painted after assembly? This would make a difference of whether to assemble with new bolts. Any original color photo ads from IH would be very helpful.

Hi The book I have shows a picture in the front of a man putting the seat on a tractor at the factory . It looked like bare steel in the black and white photo . Later in the book it alluded to the idea that they were painted assembled less the tin . The tinwork was painted separate . That makes sense too because if you look at an old rusty tractor that you can be pretty sure was never re-painted the backside of everything external has less paint on it like the oil filter housing the back of the magneto and some parts of the air cleaner . I don't say this as fact , just what it appears to be . It was all about cost so that would be the least expensive way to do it . MTC ...Randy

As others have said IH did not put much emphasis on paint.Ihave read a lot of posts about original IH primer but in 60 years around IH equipment much of it new I have never seen any evidence of primer it might be there but I have never seen it.

They were painted "mostly" after assembly. But, you will get a better job painting disassembled. I completely disassemble -- everything that will come off is removed. You can touch up the bolts with a small brush, they will be virtually unnoticeable. At least remove the distributer, air cleaner, oil filter, etc, as you cannot get uniform coverage on the back side or on the block if you leave them on. The hoses and belts were likely painted on the tractor, to me, new black hoses and belts look better than the way IH did it. But, it's a matter of personal preference. IH did not emphasize paint, and shortcutted a lot of things because it was easier and cheaper.

Guy Fay"s book Farmall Letter Series Tractors an origanality guide, would give you all of the info you need. Add some advice from the good people on this forum and you can"t go wrong.
