Ok im no pro when it comes to tractors and this might sound a little stupid but im olny a kid still and i left the starter swich on for like 5 minnutis. I smelts a burring but thaught it was my light that had dirt on it and it was burning it off, then i heard te sound of air comming out almost like a sizzling noise. I looked around and saw that it was my mag. Turend the swich and unconnecd the positive battery cable. Now im screwed i took the top of the mag off and it smelt terriable it looked like it had melted it was like wax and looked like it too. I aint getting no spark to the plugs and i was wondering if there was some way of saving this or should i trash it and get a new disturibtor. Thanks Ryan

There is a place where a wire goes on the side.On the MAG. It connectes to the swich where you filp to to start it. and the other wire that comes off the swich goes up to the box where your light swich is. The coil is like a black small tub probly 3 in long and 2 in wide and it sticks out the top. Thats where i unsrewed the 4 screws and i guess thats the winding in there and thats what melted. I toock the distruibtor off the 350 but did not thave time to see if it fits the m also the H is 6 volt and pops wants me to get that running something draws the battery dead whn you put the positive cable on. The M is a 12 volt

If you have a magneto without an external coil your switch only grounds out the mag to stop the engine. No voltage should be fed to the mag. Hal

Ryan, If you are working on the M that I gave to you it had a mag on it that did work.

If for some reason you or someone has run a "HOT" wire to it you have fried the mag.

A mag generates it's own spark, and does not need any outside power source going to it.

There is only one wire on the mag (not plug wires) that should have run from the mag to the on/off switch.

It's purpose is to ground out the mag to shut off the tractor.

I may have another mag, not sure.

You could always take the distrubtor system off of the 300 or the parts H that your grandfather has and use it, if you want to.

If you do this to your M, set #1 cyl on top dead center on your tractor before you take off the mag system. Then you can retime it without any problems.

Let me know if you need help getting it going, I will check my work schedule. I think that I am off this Saturday.

Call me if you want or need some help.

Bruce

Like old said if you have a mag you do not have any power going to it it generates its own power. If you put power to a mag you will fry it like you are saying. You must have a battery ign unit or a mag with an external coil or something hooked up wrong. JON

Sounds like you already have a battery ignition since a mag will not have battery voltage to it in any way shape or form unless it has been swithc to a battery ignition. From what you said all you did was fryed a battery type coil and $15 or so for a new coil and probably a new set of points will have you going again
