M carburetor high speed adjust

Was out fiddling with the M carb this afternoon. Noticed that closing the high speed screw would stall the engine (as expected) but backing it out and even removing it had no effect. Tractor seems to make good power and starts well by hand. (Though, my only reference is a Cub and anything makes good power compared to a Cub.)

High speed adjust is set to about 4 1/4 turns out.

I'm not too sure about this one.

Thanks, Chris B.

If you took the high speed screw clear out you should have had gasoline running out the hole. How thorough were you when you cleaned the carb?

Rusty, I thought about that and gasoline didn't run out when the engine was running, but I only kept it out for a second or 2. Anyway, I went back outside and pulled the adjust screw and fuel came pouring out of the bowl. Nice and clean.

I would say something is pluged in the carb. Needs a good soaking and cleaning and blow out ever orfice. The standard setting is 3 turns I believe. Now the SM carb I have on my H the main jet it about 1/2 turn out and thats all she will take before burning black. How about the air mixture does that make a difference in idle . With running or black smoke when you turn it in? JON

Just reread your reply and saw I didn't answer all your inquiries. Yes, the air mixture does affect the idle. Don't know about black smoke. I had it set to idle pretty smooth and haven't messed with it since.

I have cleaned this carb. Several times, but not for this reason. Looking through the parts book shows several different jets for this carb. I wonder if I need to upgrade. I did put 4" stepped pistons/sleeves in it recently and redid the 8060 head.

I supose it could be the larger jet needed But a lot of the times people clean and dip a carb but unless you know every orfice in a carb like rusry farmall does you still can have something plugged. Alot of people think that carbs are worn out and need a new rebuilt becuase they rebuild and the jets dont work right when there done. Thats a myth. Ask rusty farmall he will know for sure. JON
