H rear axle leak need experience advice

I thought I was doing a good deed by replacing the gear oil in the differential of my 43 H, what I took out of there was the consistency of mud …however after dumping in 6 gallons of new gear oil, I find that I have a pretty major leak (drip drip drip) at the left inboard axle carrier housing.

Reading my service manual it appears that I can pull the tire, outer bearing assembly and get the housing off to get at the gasket.

If anyone has accomplished this I would appreciate any advice before starting….and a few questions:

Can I just slide if out enough to clean and apply RTV

Should I purchase a new OEM gasket? is there a kit containing the felt washer, oil seal, …etc. (I guess I should look on this site)

or can I make gaskets or use liquid gasket stuff.

thanks in advance

I had one that I simply tightend the bolts as suggested...the other one it did not help. So, I did what "massey,,," suggested...that is the lazy mans way and by the way...very efficient..no further leaking!

I have repalced numerous ones!! What I do is lossen the bolts on the axle casting and pry it out as far as it will go, about 1/8 to 1/4 in. With a long thin bladed knife you can remove the old gasket. you can cut the new gasket into two halves, cutting it at an angle with the cuts near the top in the front and rear and insert each halve. I place a small amount of rv gasket maker over the cuts and bolt it back together. Has worked very well!! A neightbor did the same only left the old gasket in place and squeased rv gasket maker up between the housing and it worked also!!

I have done it several times and several ways...I have learned to tighten first, and then follow Massey 44s instructions...it is the easiest and most effience way.

The EXACT same thing happened to me on my 1942 H. I already had the tires and hubs off, so I just moved the support from under the axle housing to under the transmission case. Next I removed the PTO and then, reaching through the PTO hole, removed the bolt holding the bull gear on the axle and also placed a small wedge under the bull gear to hold it in place. Then it was a simple matter to remove the seven bolts holding the axle housing to the tranny case and slide the axle housing and axle completely out as one unit. Next, I scraped and wire brushed the old gasket off, smeared the mating surfaces with gasket sealer, slid the axle housing back into position and bolted it to the tranny case.

Chris,

Same thing happened to me with my old H. Darned rear end oil was like tar. Changed it and here comes the leak.

Before you go to all the trouble of tearing the tractor apart, crawl under there with your end wrench and tighten up all those housing bolts. Bet they have worked loose over the years.

80/90 is so thick that it takes a heck of a leak for it to pass. If that gasket is still in place, bet you can save it by just tightening the bolts.

Worth a try anyway,

Allan

Yea I tried to tighten last weekend, I didnt get the luck.

The bad.... when I went to start working on her, I relaized the bucket loader is attached on the axle housing, looks like much bigger job then I though. Much more than a six pack worth.

Maybe Ill put the old juice back in ...or welding the joint up.

I dunno Frank,

I just crawled under there with an IH wrench and pulled 'em as tight as I could get the darned things. As number of 'em had worked loose.

Stopped the leak right in it's tracks.

Allan
