When the tractor is first started it will run fairly well. But as it warms up it seems to run lean. The plugs are black and sooty. When tested with a screwdriver the fire jumps about 1/16 of an inch. It has a magneto that has sat for about 30 yrs. but it still fires. Maybe the mag. could be weak. What puzzeles me is that it will idle but when you open throttle up it will shut off and sometimes backfire. Does this sound like fire or gas? It seems the longer it runs the worse it gets. The last time it started missing. Any ideas???? Thanks for your help in advance...

Sounds just like mine did.Put a new float from Rice Equipment and she now purrs like a kitten.I would clean the carb first, and set the float to spec.(I set mine I think like 1/16 under spec)If you have any spark, the mag is doing what its suppose to,and the weak spark could simply be worn wires.

What spark plugs do you have. Could be hotter plugs would fix the problem. I have W20's in mine and they work fine. I would also make sure you have good points, condenser and the rotor is clean of carbon.

Are you sure its lean? Black sooty plugs normally mean its rich. Check the intake for obstructions. If it is lean, then check the carb float level, it may be too low, causing the engine to not get enough fuel. When was the last time the carb was cleaned? May need to clean jets, etc. Also, is the spark good and blue? If its just yellow, replace the points and condenser and that may solve the problem. Hope this helps

The symptoms you describe could result from either a weak spark or starving for fuel, but since you said the spark plugs are black and sooty I would suspect the ignition coil. The spark should be fat and blue, and it should jump further than 1/16".
