WD-9 oil pressure off the guage?

Hello,

Got the first of my two WD-9s running on Wed. Installed what I think is the correct oil guage for it(regular IH guage with a small red band on the left). The problem is I seem to have too much oil pressure? I'm running cheapo 5w-30 to just flush the engine before I put in some Rotella 10w-30. The pressure is pegged all the way to the right unless it is warmed up and idling real slow, then it is only 3/4 of the way across. Did IH make different guages in this configuration? (higher pressure for diesel) If I install a numbered guage what should it read? Seems to run fine. If someone bypassed the pressure relief on it I should still be OK in the summer I would think. Is the oil filter a full flow or bypass setup on these tractors?

Thanks,

Mark

I don't have any experience with the WD-9. However I grew up driving an MD and now own an MD. Both of these peg the oil pressure gage at full engine speed, even after the engine is warm. I think the gages IH used did not have the range to make them run in mid range. Only at slower speed will the gage come into range. So, I think what you are seeing is normal. To check it get a gage that shows the pressure and try that to see what you have and that it is reasonable.

Hello,

I think I will map the guage to my digital air pressure guage and find out just how the IH guage reads. I'm glad I've got maybe too much than not enough. I'll get back to you.

Thanks,

Mark

The fact that it gets back into the range of the gauge indicates that it is not totally out of control. I would put a calibrated (known good) gauge on it that measures to 100 psi. If the pressure stays at 60 to 70 psi, I would replace tha gauge, ang go forward in life. If it was higher, I would pull the pan and repair the oil pressure relief valve. Extreme pressure is not good for the pump, or bearings.
Good hunting, JimN
