I was just getting the Super C ready to go out for the first test drive after getting it running about Easter time. Put brand new tires all the way around, got the tranny/rearend filled with oil, pulled on the starter rod and the back of the starter broke! We had started this tractor several times since we overhauled it and had no problems with the starter before. What would have made it break? It's bad enough that it would take a full tube of JB Weld to fix it.

Take the starter off & remove the bolts that hold the starter together, & disassemble it. See what parts are needed. You can probably get them at a starter & generator shop for less than a rebuilt starter.

The newest this tractor could possibly be is 52 years old. Even though it's not likely that the starter is original, it's still probably at least 30 years old. Things fatigue, things wear, with time and proper use; this tractor was most likely abused at some point in its life.

Don't lose too much sleep over it, get a new starter, and go on with life.

...and DO NOT try to fix it with JB Weld!!!! JB Weld has no business being used where structural integrity is required. Get a new starter.

did you convert this to 12 volt and still using a 6 volt starter? usually not a problem unless you kick in the starter and let go and kick it in again before it quits turning??

Sounds like maybe the starter drive bendix gear failed to mesh with the ring gear and the force traveled back to the rear of the starter and broke it. Time to look for another starter most likely.
