Trick Maintenance Tip

You guys may have heard of this tip before but I never had so I thought I would pass it along.

A friend needed to replace the flywheel on his Jet Ski that threaded onto the end of the crank. There was no good way to block the engine from turning during removal, so he referred to a Jet Ski website similar to this one for tractors. The advice found was to remove the spark plugs and fill the cylinder(s) with rope. When the engine rotated, it would eventually come to a stop. We tried it and it worked like a champ. This procedure would work on other engines as well when there is not a good way to keep it from rotating.

Heard of that years ago for changing valve springs or seals like mentioned below.....really a neat trick if for some reason you ever want to lock a crank from turning for whatever reason.....thanks for posting!

The rope trick is also a good way to keep valves from dropping into the cylinder on an OHV four-stroke engine, for instance if replacing valve seals, if you don"t want to remove the head.

Good one,

Bill

Another good way to replace valve seals is to turn the crank until both valves are closed then fill the cylinder air pressure, 90 psi. You can make an filler valve with an old spark plug by breaking off the porcelin, drilling out the electrode and JB welding on a metal valve stem. Works very well for this. You can also find bad valve seats or bolwby like this.

I heard the rope trick was an old aircraft mechanics trick. Make sure it is on the compression stroke or you might bend a valve. Also use plenty of rope. You want the crank about 1/4 turn BTDC. Tried it on a Chevy. It worked and then I did something and forgot it was in there, hit the starter and it started and cracked the block and had water funning out the tailpipe. Heck of a way to finish a Friday night. Make sure you don't do something stupid like I did. Cost more than having someone else work on it.
