I recently have restored a 1953 Farmall Cub. It has a Woods 59 Mower underneath it. I use it to mow my grass at the house and farm. However, it appears that blade speed is very low, which causes it to pull down in what I would call normal grass conditions. I have to mow every 5 days or so if I want to be able to use my cub tractor. Is the mower to big for the cub or can I adjust the belt pully size to increase blade speed. Any suggestions are welcome. I beleive the belt pully is a 9 inch at this time. Very nice tracotr runs and drives great, just weak on the PTO.

Thanks
Shaun

I was amazed the other day when I mowed a small area of grass that was very thick and about two or 3 feet high. I mowed right through it and didn't even slow down much. I don't think my H would have done that. My deck may be smaller than yours. My blades are sharp and that little rascal really spins them. I have been very happy how mine mows. I use it about every two weeks so the grass is a good 6 to 8" high. About two hours is about all my butt can stand on it though. Rough rideing little bugger. Like others have said your deck may need a little adjustment. Mine does not have much power but does get those blades turning. Not sure if all cub decks are like this or not but mine kind of has a rachett sound when they start turning or slowing down.

It should have a 7" pulley if its a Woods.

The best solution to the whole problem is to mount a 16 hp kohler, or Honda vertical shaft motor on the deck. The advantage is that total speed control can be the tractor's function, while the mower is powered by enough shaft HP to do the job. 14 to 16 hp would be optimal. I have done it twice with mowers, one a 12hp 40" and one 50" 24.5 HP.

i have a cub also with a 59 woods. i had the same problem. turns out the deck was set wrong. i picked up a tool from the local john deere dealer to measure deck blade height. they are plastic and run about 12.00 or so. measure the front to back of the blades and the measure the side to side. side to side should have the same, front should be about 1/4 to 3/8 " lower than the rear. i think my front blades are 2-3/4 " off the ground. reset your gauge wheels in the front and set the side skids so they are a little but off the ground. i can mow in 2nd gear now fine. best to do the measurements on flat concrete driveway. good luck!

Pay no attention to Deerly D. Parted. He doesn't know what he's talking about. Yes, the horsepower is limited, but it's perfectly usable and very satisfying if you work within the limitations instead of expecting the tractor to cut like a Dixie Chopper, and whining about them.

If your pulley is 9", it's way too big. Both of mine are in the 6" range. What's happening is that you're trying to run the mower way too fast, and the engine just doesn't have enough power to do it. It's akin to trying to mow in 3rd, even with the right pulley. You just don't have the power to go that fast.

I bet your engine isn't coming up to full speed with the mower engaged, is it? The engine is lugging badly just sitting there running the mower, right?

Will the engine go up to full RPM (1800) when you rev it?

Also make sure that your deck isn't off of a tractor with a conventional PTO, as the others suggest. If so, you're beating the grass into submission with blunt clubs instead of cutting it... That'll eat up a bunch of power for sure.

I might be off on the pulley size. I don't expect the tractor to run in third, being able to run continously in second would be nice.

One of you mentioned that the tractor may not be running at full throttle with the mower running and this seems to be the case. It dogs down even when I am turning on the ends that are already cut. Does this help determine my problem?

It may be an issue with the governor not reacting to the varying load.

Both my Cubs seem to run the deck better in 2nd than in 1st.

How fresh is the engine? Have you done a compression check lately? 9-10HP is what they had when new. A tired engine might have 5.

You are not going to be satisfied (on a continueing basis) with a 59" mower on a Cub. Ten horsepower is short of what is needed to pull 3 20" cutting heads. I'd recommend taking the blade off one of the outboard cutting heads and run as a 40". My new Skag zero turn has 20 horsepower on a 48" deck; do the arithmetic!! DBP

Forgive the stupid question, but I gotta ask... Are you sure the deck is correct for the Cub? Cub PTO runs reverse direction, and "normal" mower would run backward on it.

That's not stupid, I must admit my blades were running backwards when I took the deck off my Super A and put it on the Cub. I noticed after an hour, so I crossed the belt between the idlers and the deck to switch the rotation.

Also, make sure the blades of the mower on the cub are a little lower in the front than the back, will make a big difference.

That deck is a lot for a cub if not adjusted right or if the grass is very thick.

At my previous house I could mow in second gear, this house has thicker grass and I mow in first gear. Hence the Super A!

Thanks for the help. The blade rotation is correct. I will check the adjusment that could be an issue. However, I can mow in second gear in light grass as well. It appears that it might just be a lack of power. I might look for a super A or something similar. Would the deck cross over?
