Has anyone tried using bolts instead of the studs on the Farmall M/450 engines to secure the head to the engine block. Thinking of doing this to the one I am currently working on, it will have high compresssion.

Phil

Nope..not bolts...because, where it screws into the block it is course threaded and the other end is fine thread...more suitable for even firm proper torque.

Going from studs to bolts is like going from copper to felt head gaskets.....just does not make sense.

Studs have much more clamping force and put much less stress on the block.

Head studs are very hard/strong, the bolts would need to match that strength, probably (grade 8). The second issue is aligning gaskets and the head itself. In my opinion it is easier to do with the studs. The third item is the fact that if the nut rusts on, the stud will turn out, if there is no nut the bolt twists off!
I cannot think of a strength advantage to bolts.
My opinion, JimN
