Hydraulic Pump on M Belt-Pulley Shaft?

Presently, the hydraulic pump for my M front loader is on the PTO shaft. I would like to use the PTO for mowing hay and such. The problem comes when I think of travelling from the barn to the mowing site. I don't want the mower running the whole time, and yet I do need my hydraulics. I was thinking of welding a PTO shaft to a flat plate, and bolting the plate to the pulley mount. Then, I could hang my existing hydraulic pump to the new PTO shaft. Would this be a workable setup? or would I just mess up my belt drive system and be right back where I am now?

Sounds like they've convinced you to mount it up front, which is great....

But for what it's worth, your idea of driving it off the belt pulley shaft would also work. We had an H set up that way that I raked hay with for years.

As long as doing the work anyway, consider welding a sprocket to the front engine pulley and driving the pump there. It won't be any more work or expence and you will have live hydaulics for your loader.

That's a thought! Then I'd save enough money to buy that mower you have up for auction. I'm still kicking myself for not getting that last one you had for sale.

I have the live hyd. system on my '53 super M also with a F-11 farmhand loader... The live set-up is sooo much better. It opens up the rear end for a 3-point if you don't already have one.. I mounted an after market 3 point and then purchased a sector control with a float position. Plumbed it in and it all works just like a much more modern tractor. I also have the same bucket set-up as yours. I have an 7 + foot bucket and a set of bale spears that quick mount in place of the bucket... Good luck.. Tallperson

I love my front loader, too. SOooooo o Handy! I guess I have the same problem with my tractor that most of you have. My wife will say, "You want to spend HOW much on that tractor?" :-)
.
Let's see Super M hydraulic pump, possibly hardened timing gears, new hydraulic lines, 3 point hitch, 3 point hitch, replacement hydraulic controls (mine have slow internal leaks and I'll need to control that 3 point hitch), back blade, priority diverter, CharLynn power steering... Ahhh, it's fun to dream! I know I can sell my wife on the power steering. Maybe then she'd love my tractor more. Hmmmmm.

What kind of loader do you have on your M? Could it be operated with the tractor belly pump?
Also, if you will be doing a lot of mowing, you will get along much better with the loader completely removed from the tractor.

Farmhand. Nice unit! It has Looooonnnnn ngggg cylinders for the arms, and another smaller pair for the bucket. Also has an interesting bucket where the front half comes off, turning it into a dozer blade. I think the cylinders would need far more hydraulic fluid than the belly pump could hold.

The idea is sound, But I don't think it would be practical to hang it off so far to the right. Make a flange to drive the pump that matches the pulley mount flange, and go direct. Machining and a press fit befor welding will assure wobble free alignment. Be sure to anchor the pump housing to keep it from spinning, The speeds are different, (higher on the pulley) so the pump needs to be able to handle it. If it wewr me I would drive the pump from the engine with a belt, and add on pulley for live hyd.

Thank you for your thoughts. I guess I need really to consider going live hydraulics. The parts are so expensive, though. I have a very late M, so I already have the right distributor mount for Super M live hydraulics, but...

1950 is the cutoff point, but not sure of the exact serial number.

I didn't know 1950 was the cutoff, but mine is a 1951. So, that's kinda like confirmation of what I was told.
