Starting question

I have a 46 H that regularly fires right up (maybe because I wasn't paying attention). Recently I find it will not start with any appreciable throttle. 12V with ballast resistor and good starter. Seems like it will only start at idle. Any reason why this would be?

My C with 12V does the same thing. The C with 6V seems to start ok with up to 1/2 throttle. The explanations make sense to me.

Not unusual. My Super H, also my Minnie Mo U do this when they are warm. Cause I believe is the very low airflow thru the carb when cranking. It does not pick up enough gas from the main jet to fire the engine if the throttle plate is partially open. However if the throttle is closed there's enough flow thru the carb idle circuit to provide the right fuel mixture. (The effect I believe is aggravated by the lousy quality gasoline we have today.)

Sometimes opening the main fuel jet a half turn or so will help. However this may also make the engine run too rich at speed (wastes gas and fouls plugs). Or you can "snap" the choke closed then quickly open again when you first hit the starter.

However easiest thing is simply start the engine with the throttle closed. It always works on mine!

Closed trottle plate makes for less gas/air comeing in so maybe you have a gas flow problem. On some carb it can also sort of work like a second choke but not sure on that one

Out of habit, I start tractors at no more than 1/4-1/3 throttle, particularly when cold. If warm it doesn't make much difference. Just enough to keep them running after they start. A cold engine at 1/2 or 3/4 throttle will die much easier than one with less throttle opening. Yours likely has a fuel problem if it refuses to start at the setting you are used to.
