Tried to Tune up the 460.....

Well, the 460 gasser was running pretty rough. I bought a tune up kit, new plugs, new coil, new plug wires, new dist. cap, too. The old plugs looked pretty bad.

Couldn't replace the fixed side of the points--kit came with an off-set arm, the one in my distributor is straight, so I polished it up good and reset the gap.

Fired her up and she still runs rough, misses some, both at idle and WOT. Lots of black smoke briefly at throttle up.

What's next, carb rebuild??

Compresion test. Any of the 6 cylinder gassers are hard on valves.

Like mentioned earlier, next step should probably be a compression test. All the new tune-up parts in the world won't make a worn-out engine run good.

Assuming that's ok, pull the plug wires one at a time to see if you can find which cylinder is missing.

Did you replace the condensor when you replaced the points?

There's not something restricting the air intake to the carb, is there? That wouldn't cause a definite pronounced miss, but it'd be worth checking.

There's not a valve that's adjusted too tight or sticking is there?(compression test and finding out which cyl. is missing will help ya diagnose that if there is)

If compression is ok, it really, without actually being there, sounds like something along the lines of point dwell problems....get that fixed so you know it's right...(cam on distributor shaft isn't worn out is it? check point gap at each spot)or better yet, spring for an electronic ignition kit and eliminate your point worries forever.

Why can't you replace the fixed side of the points? It doesn't do any good to replace just half of the set. I'm guessing that the point gap is way off, which will cause the ignition timing to be off.Fix 'er right and then see how she runs.

Well, it's 60 miles to the nearest CIH dealer. The tune-up kit that I ordered had an off-set arm on the fixed part. The one in my tractor is straight. The new one didn't line up by 3/8s of an inch. I resurfaced the contact on on emory cloth and reset the gap to .020" per the manual. Actually, the old points didn't look that bad, not really pitted. Next chance I get, I'll try to find the right set for my distributor.

I think first thing I'm gonna do is check each plug, make sure I'm getting spark, and then check compression.

I need to get to the bottom of this! The old girl runs cool as a cucumber and the oil pressure never drops under 40/45.

Dunno,

Seems to me that it would of course blow black if it isn't hitting on all cylinders and besides that, fuel doesn't usually cause a "misfire".

I'd be for checking that compression first and looking at the fuel last.

Black smoke is too much fuel. I think you know where you need to go next.
