This little girl has me scratching my head. One of our 140"s came into the shop with an external leak on the touch control. (other than the leak it was working ok) Order rebuild kit from local IH dealer, tear apart system on bench, kept things nice and clean, lubed all of the new seals and bores with clean hydraulic oil while installing, laid all of the parts out carefully so I put them back in correctly....long story short, reinstall unit onto machine, add oil, cranked it a bit without firing to make sure oil got around through system and then gave her spark and let her rip....hydraulics worked great, up down,up down, several times...then nothing...WHAT HAPPENED? fluid level good, screen clean, orifice seems okay...

Do I have a valve hanging up? It seems that the unit is underload...oil maybe bypassing? Fluid seems to get warm quickly, I check the settings and the control linkages seem to be okay...pump appears to be working fine. Where do I start?

Thanks for any help.

Well, the regulator valve piston was the trouble. Some dummy (Ahem..me) put the plastic plunger and spring in the wrong way, so much for laying the parts out...or so I thought, in order. With your help and a quick look at the parts diagram and I saw my error.

Anyhow, she is lifting and holding like a dream now. Thanks for the replies and suggestions. R.

I would suggest you try and obtain the IH Seviceman"s Handbook, GSS-1024, which contains a trouble shooting chart to identify operating problems and their remedies.
In the meantime if you think the pump is under load at all times with the rock shafts not moving, the cause could be: 1- The orifice plug is stopped up with foreign matter, making regulator valve inoperative. Remedy: Remove the plug in the head which allows access to the orifice plug. Remove and clean the orifice. Before replacing the orifice plug, flush out the opening by cranking the engine with the ignition off. 2- The regulator valve piston and its seal ring are stuck in the block bore, making the regulator inoperative. Remedy: Remove the regulator piston and seal ring. Free up the piston and replace it, together with a new seal ring.
Hope this helps, Sid.

Well..... sometimes, life's a female dog and then you die (have to speak in code here:)!

I rebuilt mine a couple months back and so far..so good. It sure sounds to me like a piece of hidden crud in the system has decided to move....and has blocked the flow. Did you just use the gaskets or add some 'blue glue' for good measure? The innards are quite simple and obviously, you put it back together right or it never would have worked again. But, it did and now it don't. The fluid getting warm says blockage. I don't know where to start, but it looks like maybe another trip to the bench is in order to find the problem. Have fun and an athletic supporter handy...that unit is a tad heavy.

This might be long shot but...if there is a implement mounted on the tractor, like the cultivators, they might be hitting the underside of the tractor when they are raised thus keeping the hydraulics working.

No, the arms are not hooked up at the moment, and a I said it went up and down several times, then....nada. I guess it is back to the bench, but first I guess I will pull the battery and try pulling the cyl head/cover off so I can get a look at the valves and see if a bit of junk got in the valves.

And no I didn"t use the blue goo, i bought a seal and gasket kit from the dealer, BUT the person before me HAD used blue goo and perhaps a bit of that was floating around the resevoir.

Anyhow, thanks for the help, I will let you know what I find.

Randy
