H Governor problem?

I have a 1950 H that I bought new, rebuilt the engine in 1970, retired her in 1980. Last fall before I put her away for the winter, she started to run erratically. Through all ranges of throttle, the engine "hunts" or does not stay constant. This week I have cleaned and and installed a carb kit but still no change. I have a service manual and went through the set-up and adjustment process of the governor and made sure my linkage was was tight. This seems to have improved the hunting a little. I have done the carb set-up per the manual as well. I can't get her to even out. Any suggestions?

When synchronizing carburetor & governor, first loosen the 2 screws on the tube that attaches the carburetor to the governor housing. Be sure the carburetor end is tight then gently tap on the tube to "center" it; tighten the screws on the governor end. Now remove the breather tube cover (angled surface) and with the throttle lever wide open, check that the linkage pin is easily inserted into the clevis while holding the throttle operating rod wide open (rotate upward on the rod). Run the engine to warm and re-adjust the mixtures for high & low speed operation. At WOT turn the bottom screw in & out to achieve maximum RPM"s (near perfect combustion, not best for puling); then add 1/2 turn out or more for power as the need dictates.
At idle, repeat the process but note that the idle screw is adjusting air flow, not fuel, so turning in richens the mixture.
Reset idle speed and repeat the process to assure accuracy.
I enjoy working with carburetion; just don"t like old gas (10-20 years old) in the carb when trying to rebuild them. Phew!!

I just rebuilt the governor on my M this last weekend due to loud bearing noises. The bearings are still available from the dealer but the the governor shaft and weights are no longer available. I'm guessing, You will find that your governor shaft is somewhat worn where the thrust washer has been riding on it for years which wants to make the thrust washer hang-up on the shaft rather than free movement. I took a file and cleaned up the surface on the shaft where it was worn. Incidently, with new bearings, you can't even hear the governor running now.

Is the governor spring getting weak? Might want to invest in a new one before you get into it too deeply. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Yes, try a new spring first. Also, the weights get worn where the pins that hold them in place go through, and the pins themselves get worn, which will cause some of that erratic "hunting". Also, the main shaft and the flyweight assembly get dirty and worn. The weight assembly needs to be able to move smoothly on that shaft. If it is dirty or worn, it will cause or add to that erratic behavior.
