I am trying to remove the ajustable pully for the fan belt. I have posted a pic of the pully and the fan end. what I cant figure out is how does the spring loaded part on the end of the shaft that the fan is mounted on and how do I get it off. What do I do with the bolt on the end. does it pound out or what? if pic does not show up go to link and look at bottom pic.

So cnks you are saying to pound on the pin head part of the bolt to make it come out the threaded end? As for the packing on the water pump is this what the screw in brass part is around the shaft with notches in it. sorry to be such a pain but I need to get this fixed. The IH dealer quoted me a price of $181.00 for the pully part. that seems like a bit much to me.

I would prefer to use the word "tap", rather than "pound". The threaded end goes IN. I don't understand why yours is so difficult. There is a flat tapered surface on one side of the pin. Thus, tightening the nut draws the pin in tight. I suppose yours could be rusted, but it should come out. DO NOT try to drive it out by hitting the exposed end in the picture, you will be tightnening it more. Look at www.steelwheelranch.com and call Mike Bunck (I'm at the wrong computer and don't have his phone numbe). He will have the parts you need, also a used water pump, or a new one, if you can accept one made in China. His is completely honest, his prices are fair.

The notched nut holds the packing material in. If it leaks, try tightening it slightly. You can add more packing (from CIH, or Mike, if you call him), or you can remove the old and start over.

You can probably get the broken part from salvage, not sure anyone makes those. The pin holding the water pump drive/springs on has a nut on the other end. Remove the nut and pull the pin and the drive comes off.

I have tryed pounding the pin out with leaving the nut on the end. But not much luck. Put lots of penatrating oil on it and letting it set. will put more effort in next try. Was not sure how it came out so I thought I would consult this page. I might have to have the water pump rebuilt would it be easyer to take the whole pump off to work on it?

It's easier with it off. If it only needs packing, it will be much easier with the radiator removed. The pin will only come out one way. In your picture, remove the nut and pull up, You can't push it down because the diameter changes.

Woops, maybe I am misreading this. Thought you were talking about the shaft pin (wedge bolt), but I guess you are talking about the bolt with spring. Sorry.

It's called a water pump "drive" pin in my H parts book, and a water pump "driver" pin in my M parts book. Shaft pin or wedge block are good descriptions also. I suppose the 400 could be different, but I don't think so. I have an old Super H water pump. I went out, took off the nut, pushed on the THREADED end and it came out. The bolts with the springs on them just screw out.

With due respect, in the picture shown, the pin (think it is called a wedge bolt) needs to be driven down. On mine, it was REAL tight in there, and I was afraid of damaging the shaft by hitting the pin too hard on the thread side. I finally took off the radiator to gain access, then was able to use a c-clamp and small socket over the non-thread end to force it down.
