Super C starter gear question

I have a 51 Super C that the starter gear on the flywheel is slightly worn. Someone told me today that I might be able to file the teeth and be able to get more life out of it as opposed to splitting the tractor. Tractor was switched to 12 V several years ago, but the starter was not. My question is if I have the starter rebuilt for 12V, and file the gear if that will take care of the occasional grinding of the gears. You all are very helpful as I start this project. I would rather not split the tractor as I have never done this before. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

I'd try the starter gear first. That fixed mine; it sometimes wouldn't turn over, sometimes would jam. The new starter drive fixed it.

Good luck,
Bill

Where are you located in IL? I am in Ottawa so if you are close maybe I can give you a hand. I am in the process of putting a B back together.

Quincy, IL. Did you have to use a shop manual for disassembly and assembly, or was it easy enough without one. Not planning on doing it real soon, just checking my options. Thanks.

Thats probably why someone went to 12v instead of fixing it correct. Just split the tractor and replace the ring gear and probably new bendix on your present starter as it is must not be i very good shape. Just finished redoing a B because instead of fixing the ring gear they went to 12v to realy mess it up good.

How hard is it to split a Super C? Looks like just a few bolts and it is free. Will I be messing with all the clutch plates and other intimidating parts. Never done this before. Thanks

Naturally the correct way to fix that ring gear is to split the tractor and install a new ring gear. That being said, I do know a few folks that have filed the teeth back into shape without splitting the tractor and have had good success. Keep in mind that the new drive on the starter will take care of at least some of the wear in the flywheel ring. As far as rewiring the starter to be 12 volt, There is no need for that. Plenty of 6 volt starters are running with 12 volts, and have never had a problem.
